I don't think there is a division in MLB that that line up could win.

No question losing Gonzalez hurts - but we didn't lose anything else of value and this offense was one of the top offenses in the majors this year. Without injuries, I think we might have led the league in scoring by a pretty good margin. As it stands right now, we are second. Now that production needs to be replaced but I believe it could replaced fairly reasonably by somebody like Morales at first base and an upgrade in right or left field, depending on where you see Ross playing (assuming he is resigned). Even if Ells doesn't play like an MVP, a full year of production from him will certainly be a big plus. Middlebrooks could boom or bust, but I don't think the season will hinge on his performance. I really think they need to address the rotation in some manner, while making reasonable, cost effective solutions at an outfield position and first base. The bullpen looks solid and I think you have to assume that Bailey will be the closer. I feel like people keep saying "rebuilding" but a look at the roster just doesn't support that assertion. I generally agree with this but it is to an extent at least a reset. We just lost Crawford, Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez and Punto. We are clearly restarting the program. But with some reasonable adjustments I do agree that we still have a shot next year. And we are much better positioned for the future when hopefully the farm provides the kind of top young talent we can build around for 2014-2016.I am now a Cherington fan. Couldn't say that before.

Greinke is not quite at that level and there appears to be a legitimate personality mismatch with the Boston media market.
