That was based on everybody expecting them to resign Lincecum and not Cain. with the deal they gave Cain I doubt they sign Lincecum. I think he does get traded just hopefully (because of what it would cost) not to us.

Is easier/cheaper to replace Youk with WMB. Getting those pitchers will cost more than just WMB, I would say the cost would be too steep to pay.

Posts: 2156 Apr 21 12 6:11 PM Forum Moderator	Signing aging pitchers to long-term, big-money deals is not really a winning strategy. I know the Halladay, Lee, and Sabathia deals have worked out so far, but lets not forget Zambrano, Kevin Brown, Hampton, Zito, Santana, etc.

Are you kidding on Middlebrooks? Middlebrooks is our 3B for the next 10-12 years and gives us financial flexibility. He looks like a stud. He already has 7 HRs at AAA. This spring a friend of mine (reliable) reported that he saw him 'park' 12 out of 15 batting practice pitches. Nope, he goes nowhere.

Veteran Member Posts: 557 Apr 21 12 7:25 PM	Considering the situation, why not bring up Iglesias, Middlebrooks and Lavarnway and trade the guys they would be replacing for whatever we can get to improve this team. What have we got to lose? Why not give the new guys some development time. I'm not assuming the season is over. I'm not quiting. I just think we probably are just as good or better with these guys and why not get whatever value we can out of the guys we have available to trade. I know it's potentially selling low. I wouldn't give these guys away but look at today's game. We have one of the worst pens in baseball. Youk is limping around. Aviles is not the guy we want. Salty is not our answer. I'd do it.

Aviles has been more than servicable with the bat, considering the expectations. It's still very early in the season, quit with the insanity. Salty had a good game today and if he stays "hot" maybe we could get a journeyman reliever for him. That's what is insane. I'd grant you that we probably would not get optimal value for Youk, Aviles...etc right now but considering the situation I WOULD START SHOPPING THEM. Just saying! I projected these guys for 3rd place in their division before the year started. Nothing has changed. In fact, Ellsbury going down puts a few more nails in the coffin. As I said earlier ( yesterday ) I'm not giving up but our best shot is for the pitching to coalesce and if anything Middlebrooks, Lavarnway and Iglesias probably helps that to happen. Our starters can still turn things around but they need to really step up because the team overall is not in a position to carry them like last year. I'd go for it right now. Clear out Punto, Spears etc...and replace them with Aviles, Youk etc...until we can get a decent return for them. No fire sales but I'd start the transition now.

I would much prefer the Sox start on the planning of a transition and make sure they receive optimal value then go straight into fire sale mode. Agreed that the season is looking more than out-of-hand early on in the season and there isn't much hope staring us in the face, but you don't just give up on a group of major league player's who have more than enough to potential to turn this season around. No problem with them gauging value by shopping them around and putting there name on the block, but it's much to early to contemplate immediate moves, imo. Melancon, Hill, Chris Martin ... all pitched well today. No walks. But who arrives tomorrow to replace Justin Thomas? Probably nobody. They've got nobody to fill the 10-day gap while we wait for Cook, Hill, Miller. I vote for Brandon Duckworth for a 10-day, long-relief stint. And then waiver him back to AAA. (Except he threw 54 pitches on Fri.) So I give up. Why stockpile these guys? Are they waiting for an emergency so they cannot use any one of them for fear of losing them on waivers? I wonder if they can get away with waivering Repko while he's hurt, along with waivering Thomas. No DL for Repko. Give him the waiver. MAYBE CLAY MORTENSEN IS READY TO REPLACE JUSTIN THOMAS.
