Isn't Strasburg there this year? Would be amazed if you couldn't catch his games.

AFL schedule isn't up yet, but the 2009 initial team rosters are. Boston's AFL team is the Mesa Solar Sox (Iglesias not yet listed): link BTW, Strasburg is listed on the Phoenix Desert Dog roster. For draft watchers, these rosters are pretty impressive. |

Playing scrimmages against 19 and 20 year old kids in The Fort isn't quite the same as facing off against high-level prospects all looking to make a name for themselves. Who would you rather Iglesias be facing to see if he's ready? Steven Strasbourg or Brock Huntzinger?

Oh I'm with you. I'm just saying that you only send Iglesias to the AFL if you already think there's a reasonable chance he can start in Portland.
By the way, there's usually a small number of guys at Instrux who start in A+ or higher (last year: Cox, Portice, Exposito, Stanley, Chiang)

The Red Sox officially announced the signing of Cuban shortstop Jose Iglesias to a four-year major league contract and added him to their 40-man roster. Iglesias, 19, will participate in the Arizona Fall League for the Mesa Solar Sox in October.http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2009/09/sox_announce_ig.html

Iglesias, 19, will participate in the Arizona Fall League for the Mesa Solar Sox in October. OK, let's all chip in to get Drew from Pacific Prospect Report a dedicated high-def camcorder to catch all of the glorious action of Iglesias in the field at the AFL. I really, really can't wait for some video on this kid. |

Casey Kelly is listed on the Solar Sox AFL Roster. No mention of Iglesias yet, so we'll see how this all
plays out.
This would be in keeping with him saying at one point (maybe in July?) that he expected to play in a fall league to get some more reps at SS. ADD: Bierd also listed. MORE: All of the pitchers were born in '87 or before, while all of the hitters were born in '85 or later, in keeping with protecting the innings of the young pitchers. Sox still have a P to announce, per an earlier post in this thread. If Iglesias is added, there will be 4 SS on the roster and only 1 2B and 1B. Some of the SS may get playing time at 2B or 3B while someone may have to play some first base.

Per WEEI.
Casey Kelly to play in Arizona Fall League
By: Alex Speier
Red Sox prospect Casey Kelly, currently playing shortstop for Single A Greenville in the South Atlantic League playoffs, will conclude his unique season
by playing short in the Florida Instructional League and the Arizona Fall League. In the AFL, Kelly will be on the taxi squad of the Mesa Solar Sox, eligible
to play two days a week. After the conclusion of the AFL, the pitcher/shortstop will sit down with members of the organization to discuss whether he will
continue to develop as a pitcher, position player or both.

The Fall Instructional League starts up today. Hopefully shortly thereafter we get some word of mouth (Gammons?) about late-signees Renfroe, Younginer and
Volz.

Who do you think, aside from Casey Kelly, will dominate the most in the AFL?

Seeing as how Kelly is there to play the field, it's not a given that he'll dominate.
Why would we ever PH for Varitek? I mean, what if we PH for him, and it goes to extras, and vic martinez gets eaten by
dinosaurs? We'd have to use the emergency catcher.

Also, isn't this thread about the Florida Instructional League, not the Arizona league?
And, at least in Florida, are not the games (not official games but practice games) stopped periodically for instruction, etc. making it somewhat difficult to determine if anyone really dominates unless it just is obvious? |
