Should be a great day for pitching with Kelly winding down as a pitcher and Clay going for the Pawsox as long as the weather holds in the northeast.

Ho hum. Another day, another set of top pitching prospects. What a deliciously boring drumbeat.

Now if we could only say the same thing about hitting prospects ...... but I do agree with the poster who wants to see Navarro at Portland before the season is out. If he dominates A+, at least for the month of August, say. At that point he'd have a total of about half a season's exposure at A+.

I still think Hagadone's future is in the pen. I don't see how he can get ready as a starter in the time he has left as a prospect. Now if the Sox are willing to groom him to be a 27 year old rookie, that's another matter ......

You exaggerate. Hagadone is 23. He could hypothetically be ready by mid 2011. 2013 would be slow progress for a collage experience left handed pitcher that hits 97, has a curve and has a change. I'd expect him to stretch out in Greenville this year to rebuild arm strength, work off-season and possibly make Portland to start next year.

Innings progression, man, innings progression. You can't get there (meaning a relatively full-time major league rotation job) until you're prepared to pitch upwards of 200 innings. What's Hagadone going to pitch this year, 70 or 80 at most?

I would expect Hagadone to go to the Arizona Fall League, then start 2010 in Portland as a reliever (or as a starter but converted to reliever mid-year), with an outside shot at seeing the Boston bullpen by next September. I do not think that is unrealistic (see Delcarmen, Manny).

I'll think he'll be moved back to a starting role while still in the minors. Delcarmen got his shot as a starter. Hagadone didn't and the upside is too much to ignore.

aminahyaquin: Alou is a 37 year old 7 time MVP with a .347 lifetime batting average and a world of hustle. he can golden glove field in his sleep.
tGG: Alou is actually 42, has never won an MVP, has a .303 lifetime batting average, and is mediocre at best in the field.

LCBF- Hagadone throws a slider, not a curve.

I'm in agreement with Amfox and believe we'll see him in a full time 'pen role sometime during next season. I see him moving like Bard in a reliever role and he's got a better feel for his slider along with sharper break. Prior to the injury, his change wasn't that good and was still below average. I don't know where it is at now as details are thin and some reports by other outlets have been skewed in my opinion, but we're talking a pretty healthy development jump for the pitch to push him into a big league starter projection.

I don't get the automatic move to the pen for Hagadone. Even taking The Ancient One's timetable, who cares if he's 27 as a rookie? The Sox only control his career for six years, and 27-33 are excellent years to have him.

And the other guys are very different situations. Bard completely imploded as a starter. Manny Delcarmen had years as a starter to try to make it into the rotation. We're not under a Rule 5 or six-year FA gun with Hagadone for a while. He throws hard, he's a lefty, has a good slider and a change that looks like it *could* develop into a useful pitch ... the upside for him as a starter is high, and there's no particular reason to write off his chances of reaching it right now. He hasn't had enough development time to really evaluate his potential yet.

I'm not completely sold on the 27 year-old thing, anyway.

Of course, all pitchers come with an injury-risk asterisk, so who knows? But I think his current trajectory will be as a starter throughout all of next year at the very least.
