We've seen this out of Paps before when he comes in in a non-save situation. He seemingly doesn't pay full attention unless/until he has to. Then he
ends up throwing 30+ pitches, and inevitably he is really needed the next day.
And this is SO unnecessary. He's in there only because Francona won't pitch somebody multiple innings. C'mon, that's what Masterson is there for!! Well, thank goodness Paps only had to pitch a moderate inning in the end. So he can comfortably go tomorrow if necessary. But it's still such a waste to put him out there on nights like tonight.

Ellsbury in June: .368/.444/.474
Pretty sure that doesn't include tonight.

.770 OPS and he's a top 10 player in the league. And you all co-signed that, so you can't go back on it now.

Anyone have an idea why the Sox had to use four RPs tonight?
Green's play on Hanley's grounder into the hole had to be really sweet for him. Ellsbury and Papi are about the hottest hitters on the team right now. Youk looks about as bad as he ever has. |

Yes -- because IT'S WHAT'S DONE when the starter goes only 5. Thank God for the tradition of modern baseball -- what would we do without it??

His whole approach at the plate has been kind of messy recently, staring at strikes down the middle and then just trying to foul off pitches later in the at
bat. He's consistently batting behind in the count when he shouldn't.

Four relievers is no mystery to me, he used 4 arms that haven't had any game action recently. None of them will be unavailable tomorrow on a day when
we're less likely to need them with Lester on the mound. If I was managing that bullpen, I'd want to use every opportunity to keep them sharp.
Don't forget, we had a day off 2 days ago.

I was thinking about this whole bullpen situation, and it's really the wealth of quality arms that makes us realize this. Seeing Ramon Ramirez pitch the
8th in a 5-1 game will naturally raise some eyebrows because you want to save him for tighter situations, but there really isn't anyone you can throw out
there in a situation that you could almost call mop-up. Sure, 4 runs isn't a lot, but it's not like we have Lopez to throw out there and say "Who
cares if he gives up a run or two, we'll still be up." Push comes to shove, we're probably going to have a good arm in the game at all times.
What it's really going to take is hindsight to see if any of this matters. It might be frustrating to see 4 RP's used for four innings in a game like this, but in October we'll really be able to tell if he ended up hurting the team in the long run or if we all just need something to bellyache about because its June and we're playing the crappy Marlins. |

At this point in the season, the pen pitchers are on pace for the following game/inning totals FOR THE REGULAR SEASON:
Paps: 70/73 Ram2: 77/80 MDC: 68/71 Saito: 60/58 Oka: 75/75 Bard and Masterson are harder to guess, because Bard is being transitioned to more responsibility and Masterson has had a hybrid role to this point. Bard might get as high as 50 games in the majors, maybe a few less (assuming he continues to do a good job) on top of 11 games/16 IP at Pawtucket; Masterson probably in the 40's somewhere. Masterson is the "long" reliever, with 12 games, 17 IP -- but most of that overage was in one 4-inning stint awhile back, right after he was removed from the rotation. It's the top 5 I'm concerned about, and it's really the games, not the innings. It's the combination of the warmup and game pitching that gets you over the longer haul. An extra 15 pitches or so in an outing from time to time to save games on the other end is worth it IMO, especially since the Sox goal is not to get their pen pitching effectively through the regular season -- it's to get it through the regular season and 3 playoff rounds. The difference between the game totals above and game totals of, say, 8 less each for those 5 guys is reducing total exposure (warmup and appearance) by 40 appearances over the course of the season, or about one appearance every 4 games. Last night was one of those games where an appearance could easily have been saved. It's that savings on the margin that could be the difference in a tough series in October.

Used to be that people complained about Tito's slow hook, now it's the quick hook. The man manages to his talent ... but I've been a Francona guy
since he took over the team.
Looking at Lester, I was struck by a thought: assuming the rumors at the time were true, how pissed must the Twins be that they turned down the Sox offer? Lester, Lowrie, Masterson, and Bowden (or sometimes Kalish) traded for a guy they couldn't pay and had to get rid of? That's outrageous. Lester might be as good as Santana, and the Twins add a quality SS, a good young, versatile pitcher in Masterson, and a solid pitching prospect (or young OF prospect), all while saving a bunch of money. Lordy. I don't remember all of what the Twins actually got from the Mets, but considering Carlos Gomez was the centerpiece, I don't think they came anywhere close to the Sox offer. |

Did Ellsbury beat Tito in an embarrassing game of cribbage or something? You'd think with the fact that he's actually taking a few pitches (6/4 BB/KO
in the last 10 games) and making solid contact when he does swing, he should be moving back into the leadoff spot any day. I mean, it's not like Pedroia
has done anything at all in that spot except make outs (except for last couple of games, of course).
Here's the choice for the leadoff spot: a) one of the hottest hitters on the team who can also steal bases at will, or b) a player hitting .220 over his last 10 games, even being 5 for his last 10. |

I love when Don starts to go into his homerun call when the ball has zero chance of leaving the year.
edit: and Tito is still horrible at putting lineups together.
On the other hand if your tools suck and your skills are excellent you're either not highly regarded or you're Pedroia.
