Trade Rater: 2009 Third-Round Pick: David Renfroe |
Lead | ||
|
With their third round selection, number 108 overall, the Red Sox selected SS/RHP David Renfroe out of South Panola High School (MS), their
last selection of day one and their first true "signability" pick. PG Crosschecker had ranked Renfroe the 33rd overall prospect in the 2009 draft and
Baseball America rated him 67th. Like last year's first-round pick, Casey Kelly, Renfroe was a two-way player in high school who has stated his desire to
be an everyday player and remain at shortstop. Renfroe is polished at the plate with a good swing, having posted a .509 batting average during his senior
season, and can hit for average power. He has soft hands and a strong arm in the field and possesses good athleticism. As a pitcher, his fastball sits at 88-92
MPH, topping out at 95, and he also throws a breaking ball and a change-up, but both are less consistent than his fastball. He has committed to play baseball
at Ole Miss, his father's alma mater.

C. While I think he might not have slipped to the Red Sox again at 4, I'd have much rather had Stassi here. I'm not sold that the money it will take to
pry him from Ole Miss is worth it. I love the defense, but I'm not sold on the bat.

A+. I was hoping they'd take him in the second for fear that he might be taken as a tough sign for another team. I've also heard it will take less than
the $3 million to sign him away than we originally heard. He could arguably be our highest rated draftee if signed.

B, only because I can already hear everyone bitching when he doesn't tear the cover off the ball (or whatever the pitching equivalent is if he goes that
route) in his first couple of seasons. Does that make sense? No, but I don't care.

A,This is the guy I was wanting the Sox to take in the 1st round and am glad the Sox evidently found out that he would be available later on and were able to
snatch him up later and also able to get Wilson and Fuentes as well before.
Even though I did not study this draft as much as usually do with who the people were coming out, Renfroe looked liked the guy with the best tool set pitching wise and considering after a year or two he has a fall back SS/3B they can utilize him at if the Sox can get him to give pitching a try at 1st. Putting on more bulk and adding 2-3mph on his FB would easily warrant his 1st round status. |

A. He'll probably struggle for a while, but a few seasons I really think he'll be a solid player: similar to Lowrie, but with more power.
