There's gotta be a subsequent move coming here. There's gotta be a reason why the Pat's just freed up 18 million in cap space.

Because we're likely in on Leigh Bodden. He did well in Cleveland's system before failing miserably in Detroit. |

i cant imagine Cassel alone couldnt get you a second round pick when Schaub got the Falcons two seconds round picks. If this is all they got for Cassel AND
Vrabel then i hope Pioli used astroglide or Bill's going to have one really sore ass.

The Patriots didn't waste a 3rd round draft pick on a quarterback last year for the hell of it, prior to the season they had serious concerns of whether Matt Cassel could be an adequate back-up quarterback. He proved to be more than serviceable in 15 starts, but clearly no other team with a need values Matt Cassel as a long-term, above average NFL starting quarterback. Otherwise, the price would have been higher. The Patriots absolutely had to deal Cassel this off-season. If he came back on the one year franchise tender, you waste a ton of cap space and, assuming Brady is healthy, Cassel loses value sitting on the bench. An early 2nd round pick for Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel (who's nearly toast, IMO) is a huge net win for the Patriots. If someone had told you last August that Matt Cassel would bring a 2nd round pick back in trade, you'd be ecstatic. Given the change in circumstances, I guess a lot of people believed he'd be worth more... but who was going to offer it? Whether the value is good or not, I AM going to like having 4 picks in the First 2 rounds. If NE keeps them (and that is NEVER a given) that's 4 new starters/regulars (on a team screaming for youth, especially on D). |

Something is fishy with this deal. Scott Pioli went to the Chiefs and now we have a completely lopsided trade with them. I believe that what we have heard so
far is the deal. There is nothing else to it. BUT, trading these players for a draft pick freed up a lot of space. So my guess is the Patriots told either a
team or free agent to wait until they completed this trade to free up room to aqcuire some player. There is going to be a blockbuster deal very soon.

I would have liked to get more out of this deal, but I would hardly call it completely lopsided. I'm sure this was pretty much the best offer out there on
the trade market. As long as Brady is good to go, I'm fairly happy with getting another second. Surprised we didn't flip flop fourth or fifth rounder
with KC at least, though. I'm completely confident with the drafting ability of BB. Let's just hope we find the solution in the secondary.

I think most of us (including myself) just completely overestimated what Matt Cassel @ $14+ million is really worth. The Patriots had almost no leverage. They
could not afford to keep both he and Brady while at the same time filling out the rest of their team in a way that would make them a competitive team.
With Minnesota going in a different direction, there was very little chance that a team would get in a bidding war with KC. I'm still very disappointed that Vrabel was included. |

If you consider the 34th overall pick a late first then the Pats will have 2 late 1st rounders, 2 late 2nd rounders, and 2 late 3rd rounders (taking into
account a compensation pick for Asante likely at the end of the 3rd round).
I'd put my money on some of these picks being packaged and traded in some fashion. Regardless the Pats gotta go LB and DB early. That said I think they're gonna have to bring in a veteran LB...you can't expect everyone to contribute right off the bat like Jerod Mayo. |

Espn is reporting that the Bucs came in with a late offer. A first and a third for Cassel, so now i will ask why the f did the Pats jump so early at the first
offer they had. This is a total mess on the Pats front. There obviously was a market in the league for a borderline Pro Bowl caliber quarterback that is only
27 years old in a league that is so qb oriented. The minute there was a rumor of Cassel going in a trade to KC the Bucs offerd a first and a third, so who
knows if they waited a little longer what they couldve gotten. You guys can say what you want about the KC deal but the fact is the Pats really f'd up. As
far as Vrabel goes he is only a cap hit of about 3 to 3.5 mill on a cap of over 120 mill. He was an aging player but not a real concern on defense that needed
improvement in other areas before the trade and now needs a OLB.
