Do you smoke rocks? Have you been to the bleachers at a Sox game recently? Ever been to an NFL game? A lot of rowdy drunk morons, just as much as MMA. Just because some fratty jock assholes like spending $50 a wack on Affliction shirts doesn't mean it attracts the scum of society.

Why MMA is better than boxing.
1)Variety of attacks: Boxing is fairly straight forward, left or right punches to the head or body from different angles. There is a tremendous amount of precision and technique involved here and while I appreciate anyone who can pick up on the minor details mid-fight and enjoy them, I think it's harder to notice. MMA has a variety of attacks that you can enjoy and appreciate even if you have never taken a BJJ class. Left right left gets boring after an hour if you don't have a trained eye.

2)A unified name: While having the UFC be the only legitimate promoter in the US (Affliction doesn't count until they have more than one show a year and Strikeforce is nice but restrited mostly to the West Coast. Zuffa owns the WEC as well, the only other legit promotion). How many different belts on in boxing? It's hard to judge how great Joe Calzaghe is because while he has maintained a belt for a decade, who has he been fighting to defend it? How much weight does his belt have? You know that BJ Penn is one of the top lightweights in the world because he is the UFC champ. So while this may hurt the fighter's purses, it is a benefit to casual fans.

3)Safety: Boxing is considerably more violent and dangerous. Because it restricts strikes to the face and body with only your left or right hand, your main weapon of attack is to beat your opponent to a pulp. This is why there have been over 1000 deaths from boxing matches. In MMA, there have been only three deaths with two of those being unsanctioned bouts. In MMA, your variety of attacks result in fewer strikes to the head and safer fights in terms of brain injuries. A torn ACL can be replaced but brain injuries are much more impactful. Rashad Evans nearly decapitating Chuck Lidell is the exception to MMA fights, not the norm. MMA fans can enjoy and appreciate a knockout but also love to see Damien Maia's beautiful ju-jitsu submit a guy in less than a minute.

If I were born 50 years ago, I'd be a boxing fan because I do enjoy watching combat. But MMA is such a higher evolution of the concept, Bruce Lee called in like 40 years ago, and the blending of hundreds of years of training and tradition from all sorts of styles leads to not only a compelling physical show but a beautiful piece of artwork in motion. The more the sport evolves and enters the mainstream, the "YEAH DUDE!" MMA fans of yesteryear will be relegated to the sidelines and minimalized. mahalo

I think we are looking for two entirely different things. I find heavyweights, both MMA and boxing, to be boring. Everyone can get caught with a knock out punch at that weight so everyone is more cautious and calculating and a lot of MMA heavyweight fights turn into kickboxing matches. Eck, aside from Fedor I don't enjoy watching any of them. It's the smaller fighters, even the light heavyweights (who are entertaining because it is such a deep division in the UFC), that put on the best show for me personally. For some reason, the general public only is interested in boxing when it's heavyweights involved. How many regular joes know who Roy Jones Jr. is and how dominant he was?

I think both sports are more enjoyale the more you understand about the technique. If I boxed when I was younger, I would probably love boxing but I didn't and I've jumped into MMA recently and find the variety of possibilities rather than jab, hook, jab to be more exciting. mahalo

As much as it pains me to say it, Joe Rogan is almost a passable color guy. He gets amped up some time from all the coke he does but he he has a fairly good understanding of the sport. He has a bit of a hard-on for the rubber guard but the rubber guard has met some resistance in the BJJ world so I guess it's a normal reaction. But he knows his stuff and does add some knowledge to the broadcast. Bas Rutten is the man and Frank Mir is extremely intelligent too so there are better choices out there but Rogan could be worse. Goldie is another story, though. Plus you never hear a boxing commentator say, "That cut looks like a goat's vagina". Just sayin'. mahalo
