The one thing the Red Sox are not lacking at the bottom of their system is young shortstops. Just look at the group assembled for instructional league play in Fort Myers and it's easy to feel confident about the future at that position.
The Red Sox love to see and hear that. Having strong players up the middle is always a premium, and one can never have too many good shortstops in the system. At the same time, though, they are making sure there are opportunities for players to show what they can do, rather than having to wait their turn to get at-bats because another shortstop is playing that day. As a result, Gibson has been moving all over the infield, both in the GCL and at instructs, seeing time at third and second as well as at short.
