And you want to wonder why the Pirates are one of the worst teams in the league every year.

Keith Law chat
James (Highlands, NJ) - where do you see Kyle Gibson going now? does he fall out of the first round? Keith Law - Doctor's decision for a number of clubs. I wouldn't be shocked to see someone like the Red Sox bang him at 28 if he's there. Mark (Boston) - I realize I am probably risking $5 and a ban, but is your Stassi pick for the Red Sox a rare incident of best player available and need meeting or a dumb move by Sox management? Keith Law - The former. He'd be a completely sound pick at 28. They might be confronted with a better guy who falls for money reasons, though. |

So, in practice, I get it. What I do question a bit is why Sanchez? There were lots of players who are signable that many thought were better than Sanchez.

tGG: Alou is actually 42, has never won an MVP, has a .303 lifetime batting average, and is mediocre at best in the field. joshv02: But, other than that, you're wrong. |

But this isn't like years past, where they've blatantly taken the safe route over an obvious choice. There's nobody as good as Weiters, for example, for them to pass on this time. And as much as Huntington tries to claim this isn't about Sano... |

OK, since I've been doing it for the last few weeks, here's my 09 Draft wishlist. No players who have been consistently projected as being gone before
#28 are included nor there any of those who might be "sliders" (Tate, Purke, etc...).
Jake Barrett - RHP/Arizona HS Luke Bayley - C/Georgia HS Scott Bittle - RHP/Ole Miss Mychal Givens - SS/Florida HS Garret Gould - RHP/Kansas HS Billy Hamilton - SS/Mississipi HS Slade Heathcott - OF/Texas HS Kyle Heckathorn - RHP/Kennesaw State University Matt Hobgood - RHP/California HS Chad James - LHP/Oklahoma HS Tommy Joseph - C/Arizona HS DJ LeMahieu - SS/LSU Austin Maddox - C/Florida HS Tommy Mendonça - 3B/Fresno State University Aaron Miller - OF/Baylor Bryan Morgado - LHP/Tennessee Will Myers - 3B/North Carolina HS Stephen Perez - SS/Florida HS David Renfroe - SS/Mississipi HS Keyvius Sampson - RHP/Florida HS Richard Shaffer - 3B/North Carolina HS Robert Stock - C/USC Ben Tootle - RHP/Jacksonville State Kendall Volz - RHP/Baylor LeVon Washington - SS/Florida HS Reginald Williams Jr - OF/Florida HS Alex Wilson - RHP/Texas A&M Madison Younginer - RHP/South Carolina HS

He is not Posey or Wieters, both of whom the Pirates could have drafted (Love the Alvarez pick, though) in years past. And at 3, it is a huge reach, but it is not the worst pick imaginable. He'll get the bigs fairly quickly and be ready to play every day at a premium position. The Pirates have neither the time nor the money to hope for Tate/Purke/Etc to sign/develop. |

I really want Ackley just to drop 1 spot, just because with his patience and advanced approach, it would be a shame for him to go to the organization known for
encouraging players to swing at every first pitch, ... and every pitch thereafter.

From Callis' blog
These eight picks look fairly certain:Matzek possibly falling out op the top 10 is very surprising. He must be asking for a lot. |

If we get any of Scheppers, Gibson, or Crow at 28, it will be an absolute steal. All are top 10 talents. Getting very excited to see what happens with this
first round. Wish we had a supp pick this year. Angels having 5 picks inside the first 40 picks is scary.

Matzek is asking for "precedent setting" money (ie, north of $7mm), according to Callis. Hobgood in the top 5 is surprising, although I like him a
lot. I had heard last night that the Rox were going to take him at 11.
The bad thing about Sanchez at 4 is that it makes it more likely that Seattle pops Myers or Stassi at 27, although there are rumors of a Steve Baron deal at 33. Seattle is rumored to be taking a catcher at one of those spots. If the Tigers go cheap (Leake, Brothers), it essentially ensures that one of Crow, Scheppers, Gibson, Purke, Miller, Matzek, Gould or Turner fall to 28. It is shocking to me that Matzek is not off the board - he is considered to be the safest pick of the prep lefties and profiles as a Matusz-like #2 pitcher. |

I agree about Scheppers, Gibson, or Crow. While I think most of the names associated with the Sox so far have been very interesting, passing on one of those
three would be a major letdown IMO.

Im a South Carolina fan and got this nugget from one of our pay sites. They have been in touch with Wil Myers a lot over the past week and this was in an
article from today. Straight from his mouth. Seems like he thinks if he gets by KC we take him. Also our mods are predicting Ethan Carter and Chistian Walker
go to school. Also I said this morning I think too many people have us tied to Stassi to take him. Just doesnt seem right for everyone to know Theo loves the
guy.
Should Myers be drafted in any of those three positions, chances are very good he will sign. His bonus demands
are high enough that should he slip past the Red Sox, there is a fair chance he could come to school. As I've said from the beginning, don't hold your
breath but don't be stunned if he's on campus in fall should he slip out of the first round
