Kotsay won't get us anything...but Byrd, Casey, and Timlin are all type B picks

Not that we'd get rid of the following...but Varitek is an A, and so are Okajima, Papelbon, Beckett, Lester, Dice-k, Youk, Bay, and Pedroia

Wakefield and Drew are also B's

I'm missing some but just follow the link. It's not that pertinent to remember most of the aforementioned since they either aren't free agents or the Sox won't get rid of them.

The best chance to get a pick out of that group is Varitek. I'd offer arb to Tek (and pray that he signs elsewhere) and Byrd and let Casey and Timlin walk (IMO Timlin will retire, finally). Byrd may well accept arb and then settle.

Again though, I'll remind everyone that in order for the Red Sox to get compensation for those players, they either need to turn down arbitration or sign with another team before the arb. deadline. Personally, I don't see Timlin being offered arbitration, so that's out the window. The other guys maybe.

The good thing about the type B free agents, is that the signing team won't lose anything. Therefore they would be more likely to be signed before the arbitration period even starts, saving the sox the decision entirely.

Its about time someone stood up to the NCAA; they've been raping these kids for millions. He should be allowed to have an advisor present when speaking with a team that drafted him because he'd be dealing with lawyers representing the team. Unfortunetly this won't amount to anything, but its nice to seen someone put the onus on the NCAA.

I just didn't feel like getting seven different kinds of scabies that night. ~ Chach

PG ranks Hunter Morris as the 11th best prospect for the 2010 Draft. Grandal is 18th (it mentions he turned down 1 million from the Sox).

Keith Law: (1:36 PM ET )I'm saying I would take him over Strasburg. 16-year-old catcher with ++ arm, polished bat, and power? His skill set and polish are a more scarce package than a potential #1 starter.

Here is some more background on Grant Green from the Cape Cod Baseball League, I hope it is helpful.
Green was named the 2008 winner of the Robert A. McNeece Outstanding Pro Prospect Award, joining Major League stars as Mark Teixeira (Orleans 1999), Billy Wagner (Brewster 1992).
Green, a 6-3, 180-pound native of Anaheim Hills, Calif., is about to enter his junior year at USC, where he was named to the All-Pac-10 Team last spring. He hit .390, second best in the conference, and led the Trojans in virtually every offensive category. He drove in 46 runs, belting nine homers and five triples.

"He's a true five-tool player," said his manager of the Chatham A's (recently renamed Chatham Angler's) John Schiffner "He can run, although he doesn't have blazing speed, and he has a strong arm and can throw people out. And he certainly can put the bat on the ball. The scouts I've talked to say he's almost certain to go in the first round of the draft next June."

Schiffner says Green compares favorably to Tampa Bay rookie third baseman Evan Longoria, whom he managed at Chatham three summers ago. "They're similar body types and they have the same dedication to the game," Schiffner said. "I'm very fortunate to have had them both here at Chatham."

In 2007, Green helped Yarmouth-Dennis capture the Cape League championship as he hit .291 with four homers, 12 RBI and 11 steals. He played all four infield positions for the Red Sox and was considered the No. 16 prospect in the entire league.

In 2008, Grant finished fourth in the Cape league with a .348 batting average and was among the leaders in six other key offensive categories. He was second in runs scored (37) and slugging percentage (.547) and third in hits (56), doubles (12) and extra-base hits (19). And his on-base percentage of .451 ranked fifth in the league.

On the base paths, Green was successful on 10 of 13 steal attempts. In the Cape Cod League All Star Game, Green smashed a clutch, two-run homer over the center field fence to pull his team even and earn the East's All-Star Game MVP award.

Can I take it from Crow's projection at #8 that the 2009 class is though to be better than 2008 at this early stage?

Stock is the one that intrigues me. I mean the kid will be a 19 year-old junior when the draft is conducted. Sure he hasn't lit the world on fire but the ability is there. Who would have ever thought though that his plan to enter college a year early would have actually hurt him? Sure in hindsight it makes sense afterall he is a teenager playing against 20 somethings. But in any regards you can't deny his skill level, he is 19 and needs work but what teenager doesn't? IMO he has the ability to make teams regret not drafting him.

Kyle Newton's parents won't have to travel far to watch their son play college baseball.

Newton, a shortstop for George Jenkins, signed his national letter of intent to play for Florida Southern College, deciding to join one of the top Division II programs in the country and stay close to home.

"I thought I could further my education and further my life there," Newton said.

Newton said he also was recruited by Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State and Kentucky, but his decision came down to FSC and the University of Tampa.

He said he has worked out in front Kansas City Royals scouting personnel, and the Boston Red Sox have shown interest in him.

"I'm hoping to get drafted," Newton said. "If the right offer comes along, I'll have a big decision to make."
