One thing we're sorta overlooking on Diaz is the fact that he's already on the 40-man roster. This forces the Sox' hand a bit with promoting him;
they need to be aggressive because the clock is ticking on him. I wonder if he weren't on the 40 would they let his offense develop a little more before
promoting him?

Diaz seems extremely gifted defensively, I cannot wait to see him in the field. Does anyone know his Range Factor and Zone rating?
Brian, that's interesting because he does need more developement at the plate. He's only 21 and I can't think of another reason to rush him offensively. |

Diaz now has 2 options remaining so you're looking at a window of 2 more seasons in the minors and then he'll have to go through waivers. He'll have to break camp with the team in 2011 assuming he wouldn't pass through waivers. He'll be 24 years old and out of options. Diaz will have to take up a 25-man roster slot and the window is shorter for the Sox to determine how ready he is to do that. Plus, they most likely won't be able to send him down once he makes the team. |

I think the thought is since he is taking up a spot on the 40 man roster, the Sox need to rush him to figure out what they have since that spot might need to
be used to protect some of their other talent in the next year or so. So being on the 40 man roster leads to his development being rushed.
I always thought this was one of the downsides to ML contracts to draftees, you might need to cut bait with them earlier than you might like to because of their placement on the 40 man roster. |

go somewhere where they can play. Without this rule what is to stop teams from keeping a great player in their system and just leave him there until they need
him. The players have rights too.

Diaz signed at 16... which makes him eligible for the Rule 5 draft at an earlier age. The Red Sox placed him on their 40-man roster last year because they
thought there was a chance that he would be taken in the Rule 5 draft, and the Red Sox did not want to lose him. However... that starts the option clock...
which means that by 2011, Diaz must be put on the 25-man roster or put on waivers.

The Red Sox can send him up and down all they want in 2008, 2009 and 2010. By that time they should have a pretty good idea what they have in him. Also, by 2010 any questions about Lowrie will be answered, and the team will know much more about Tejeda, Navarro, and Espinoza. Placing him on the 40 this offseason was not a high-risk move, and there is little chance it has or will hurt his development.

that play defense like he does at 21 don't slip by.
