Very well written, sum up the off season article. Loved this line: "Clay Buchholz-Jacoby Ellsbury (Red Sox tag team)".

Kyle Kendrick gets Punk'd
From the article: Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Kyle Kendrick was shocked to learn that he'd been traded to the Yomiuri Giants in Japan for a player named "Kobayashi Iwamura." The "trade" was, in fact, a prank. The ruse was orchestrated by pitcher Brett Myers and was elaborate enough to include Amaro, manager Charlie Manuel, Kendrick's agent, the media and others. Watch the video. It is absolutely hysterical.

So on Sundays most people prefer to get hammered and watch the favorite NFL team. I am in that boat myself.

I literally stared at that picture for 30 seconds and said what the fuck? Did Joba spend the offseason not eating and smoking crack with Nicole Richie? That
sucks being a Red Sox fan. mahalo

Has anyone read Heyman's piece on the best GMs? Link
1. Theo Epstein 2. Billy Beane 3. Dave Dombrowski 4. Mark Shapiro 5. Brian Cashman 6. Pat Gillick 7. Josh Byrnes 8. Omar Minaya 9. Dan O'Dowd 10T. Kenny Williams 10T. Kevin Towers Is Beane way overrated or what? Even so, it is the re-emphasis on player development that excites Epstein most. Asked to name the best decision made during his tenure, he points to following the 2004 championship with an '05 draft that set up the Sox to compete for years: Clay Buchholz, Ellsbury, Jed Lowrie, Michael Bowden and Craig Hansen were their first five picks.Kudos to Theo

I liked that article until I notcied that he referred to Coco Crisp as a free agent acquisition.
Edit: I mis-spelled "free" if you can believe it, and I know you can. |

I think Cashman is highly underrated. I rather view him as the voice of reason in a group of idiots. Had he had complete power in the past, the Yankees would
be a lot more competition in the future than they project to be now. The good news is that if the Yankees don't make the playoffs, he'll be the
scapegoat. I doubt that it's his fault that they painted themselves into a corner with long term contracts to a bunch of aging players but he'll be
elsewhere. No way a Steinbrenner will shoulder the blame.

That is such an unbelievably worthless list, no surprise since its from Heyman. Seriously, Kenny Williams is there? Shapiro should be number 1 with what
he's done there. Even though O'Dowd was awful for the first few years there, he's done an absolutely amazing job in the past 3-4 years in pretty
much every facet of his job. I'll also 2nd friedman being a glaring omission. Also, what the hell does Doug Melvin have to do to get noticed, go on a
Milwaukee's best fueled murderous rampage?

Hank is the best thing for basbeball in a long, long time.
Hank Steinbrenner insists baseball is being picked on for its trouble with performance-enhancing drugs, and claims the problem is bigger in football. Rest of the article. It's a good one.

I mean, the guy probably has the lowest budget in baseball year in and year out and not only are his teams competitive, but they even won a world series. Also, when was the last time he made a bad trade? He consistantly trades away valuable players because of org. philosophy and rarely does he not get at least a fair return. He's better than at least 4 guys on this list. "Being Scandinavian myself, I can tell you that Lars is the name of the mythological Norse God of Batting." Drew (Pacific Prospect Report) |

I doubt it. They have Mariano locked for a few years and I really don't think K-Rod will want to sign as a set-up man.

His elbow is going to explode in the next 150 innings. Let the Yankees give him the 5/75 deal. Though I really don't think they will. I imagine he'll
go to some crappy team that spends money just for the sake of it. Say the Dodgers or Rangers or Cubs.

That article doesn't even mention the Yankees. Future closer for the Yankees ? I seriously doubt it. They just signed Mariano to a long term contract and
we've seen quotes indicating that hey are near their spending limit. (Reports that they would have to move Matsui to sign Santana). If anything, since
Mariano is 39, the debate next year from the MFY will be along the lines of 2 years ago Papelbon / Folke, ie, Chamberlain / Rivera.
Even the MFY have a limit, they are near theirs. If they don't make the playoffs this year, they will be way over their limit for next year. The Yankees shopping trip is pretty much over for a while. |

The only big contracts that expires after this year are Pettitte, Musina, Abreau and Giambi. If they lose those players, they will have to replace them,
especially since that's 40% of their rotation. Additionally, in the ARod signing, they lost an additional $8m/yr. that Texas was paying towards his salary.
Their salary total is in the neighborhood of $215 and I don't see how that is going to decline. If they don't make the playoffs, their income will
further be reduced by somewhere in the neighborhood of $30m. Since they have a cross town revenue rival, their future income will also be reduced by crossover
fans. The contracts they signed this offseason were all long, large and to old players. To the plus side, they will have a new stadium with a larger seating
capacity. Overall, not a good situation to be in.
Edit: changed after looking at Cots.

Not to beat on a dead horse but how Larry Beinfest is not on this list is beyond me.Because he's not their GM anymore, he stepped up to being the President. There has been some crazy turnover at GM this offseason especially from some big names (Schuerholz, Jocketty, Ryan, Beinfest)

Duffman545 wrote: Obviously the next couple season will the most telling as to how successful he's been, but look at the team the Rays have built and the efficient way that they've done it. They have drafted well and concentrated on building mostly from within - relying on their young players without rushing them to the majors before they're ready. Unlike many low budget teams, they haven't made ANY bad signings that I can think of - signing veterans to short-term, low-cost deals - and have made intelligent trades - dealing from surplus to acquire scarce resources, and buying low on once-hot prospects (Pena, Joel Guzman, Jackson, Howell). they also have done a good job locking up their core players (Crawford, Shields, even the Baldelli deal looked really good at the time) to long-term, low-cost deals.More than anything else, though, more than any other small market team (except the Marlins), the Rays since Freidman's arrival have had a plan and have stuck to it. They develop their own talent, and pay to keep it, but avoid overpaying on the FA market. I don't think it's any coincidence that all of their core players seem to be breaking in/peaking at a similar time, with a specific window targeted. He also got them a great deal for what appears to be an incredible new waterfront stadium, as much as I'll miss the Trop's AC. But, like I said, they'll have to actually win to justify this. |
