If these "multiple sources are connected to Boston or Meyer, that's one thing. But too often, I think sources are just random scouts around the game who hear "things."

I'm sorry, but until these guys actually sign and then do something of note in the minors, let alone the majors, I think I'll hold off on making the 2005 comparisons. Yeah, I was looking at the past few drafts last night and I wouldn't be suprised if the 2006 draft turns out better than the 2005 draft. Other than the top five guys in 2005, there really isn't much there. On 08/16 it might be an interesting topic which is the best draft, 2005, 2006, or 2008. Hopefully by than 2008 is way ahead of the others.

If Goldstein is right and they're hammering the last bit of the contract you have to have as much leverage as possible. This would be quite the haul, even if we only got the top ten and Meyer. I totally agree, while Marquis is a great idea, wouldn't a power hitting prospect Oropesa or Brandon Miller make more sense here. Navary Moore would complete my dream draft for this year. The number of teams going over slot is steadily increasing in the draft, and the number of teams paying way over for international signings is well discussed. Player development is "in" again. It was a major undervalued aspect but the success of even big name teams developing players (Sox and Yanks included) and the shift to focus on the farm not free agents means IMO the draft and international signings will trend up. Right now the draft vs the international market looks better value (for big talent) 18 at HS and American vs 16 and never been to America is a big difference for similar pricing. The Sox have constantly aquired more talent than they should be able to via the draft with cash. If the perceived value of a young stud is higher (and IMO it clearly is- trade value for example) then signing bonus will climb. I think there is a good chance the Sox sign more people at decent money that we expect. Or they start signing more off the radar Venzuelan/ Australian kids. I said this in another thread. I really think this is true, I don't want to get too excited until it's more offical but I think the Sox will sign everyone they can because the cost of signing good players is going up. I don't want to derail this thread, but I don't see any of those guys being much more than backups at the major league level. I think esposito is the best of the lot, but he is still a long way away.

You all know in the back of your head you're thinking about it being true and picturing who else they can ink and how much talent that actually is. I'm catiously optomistic as well, regardless of the possibility it's bad info. If it's true, I hope this doesn't mean they are done. Moore would be unreal. I would like to see Oropresa and Marqui. I dont know much about Brandon Miller, but if he's a good power hitting prospect then i'd obviously be happy about that. Power bats are hard to find and it seems like we have a lot of speed/average guys right now, but are lacking power. I think Marqui should fall into the power bat category as well and I love his swing in the videos i've seen.

Look back from our draft history (now to 10 yrs back), only average 1-3 are make it to MLB with the Red Sox. So, there's no guaranteed for all 2008 signed draft players to be in MLB level with the Red Sox. Our 2005 Draft probably the best ones during last 10 yrs. We'll see what happens from our players from Draft 2006 thru 2008 in few yrs. Take easy on threads about our recent signings.

If you stockpile a large number of players who have high ceilings, that gives you a much higher percentage of players who have a shot at making the bigs or, just as importantly, can be used to acquire talent via trade someday. (Matt Murton was just as important to the 2004 World Championship as any other player the Sox drafted because he was used in a key trade, and he never played an inning for the Sox). It's not like there's a definite number of players who will make the majors for each team, regardless of how many tough signs you make. And Drew, those players may not be MLB stud-caliber prospects, and the list probably could be pared down some, but drafting a player who eventually becomes and MLB backup isn't necessarily a failure. In refuting the point that there's "nothing there" in 2005 beyond the top five studs, those are mostly good names to toss out there.
