The team is playing like it's still on all-star break.

Yankee Stadium? And, the game in Detroit, he was cruising along until he slid on his ankle funny and after that play he wasn't landing right causing him
to lose all his stuff in the 4th inning. Then, there was the broken nail game against the Twins. Temple said it best as he ran into bad luck.

Wait a minute. Where are all the people who were saying that Clay's stuff showed improvement his previous start, and that he'd be fine? This start
could simply be one of the hiccups that occurs along a pitcher's development path. This may take some patience. Of course, then there's the question of
why Clay was brought up before he was entirely ready. Maybe that's the real issue here, that the Sox were so anxious to get Masterson converted to the pen
that they rushed the Clay promotion.

Yesterday game, I'm loss for the words by the way Clay pitching & Manny's blunder play. It's too easy for me to switch my channel to watch
different program before my bedtime. Clay's struggles continued all way from his Spring Training to 1st half pitching performances (pre-injury/post injury)
to Triple AAA (work on fastball) to 2nd half now. Nothing is work for him. MLB hitters seemed have no trouble with hitting his fastball commands. Minor &
Major league hitters are different. What works for him in minor league, doesn't work out well in major league. Clay is clearily not the same pitcher as
last yr. Why gamble for using him when there's no guarantee for win in every time they hand him with the ball? We need our starter pitchers that can win
most games, not throwing away some games (like yesterday). The management realized that Clay hit the wall again with his progress. Not good idea for them to
change the way he is pitching.
I think it's time to cut loose some of RS players. Cora have no answer at SS as defense. It still another bullpen problems after they get 4 days off. Lopez is no longer lefty specialist. Nothing changes about their struggles. Hope that the management figure it out now before it is too late. |

ancientsoxfogey wrote: His stuff looked fine against Baltimore. His fastball had some zip on it and his curve was sharp. He had a bad first inning. Yesterday, he didn't have anything. His fastball was flat and his curve was a little loopy. No feel for the ball or what have you. It happens to pitchers. Beckett a couple of starts ago didn't have great stuff, but he grinded it out. That's the difference between a veteran and young pitcher. He's going to have to learn to battle those days he isn't completely on and grind through 5 or 6 innings to minimize the damage. Part of development really. A lot of us are used to watching the finished product out there with the Schilling's and Martinez's. We're watching the complete process now as even those guys weren't polished in their early careers. |

Precisely right, Cem. If it is time for Clay to be up, then we have to accept some rough outings. Another reason we need a long man in the pen, which we
don't have right now.

When Papi slides back into the three hole I think it is time to at least contimplate hitting Pedroia leadoff with Youk second. |

Off topic, but I thought I'd throw it in for interest's sake. The A's just took the lead against Mariano in the 9th in NY, which is surprising
enough, but the way they did it is interesting. Single, PR, immediate SB, single to drive in the run by Rick Sweeney, who himself immediately stole 2B. Have
the A's found a way to get a running game going on Rivera?

It's because Posada still can't throw. The entire league is going to be running on him the rest of the way.
Unfortunately, it looks like Huston Street will choke it away. |

Yup. Huston Street blows the save.
And a few innings later, Lenny DiNardo hits Molina with a 2 strike pitch to force in the winning run.
