Greene could definitely be interesting away from Petco, as Temple points out. His temperament would fit right into that lineup, too. Creates a bit of a logjam with Lugo comes back, but those things, as they say, have a way of working themselves out. |

If we hate a .685 OPS SS, I just imagine what will happen with a .593 OPS SS out there.
Boston doesn't deserve me.

The only trade I'd do including Greene would be Lugo and Crisp to San Diego for Greene and Hairston. Hairston could be the right-handed bat with pop coming
from the bench. But that trade has zero chance of happening even if Theo would include some cash.

I don't know what is wrong with Greene this year, maybe he is in a prolonged slump. With the Padres, Greene was expected to be a run-producer. With the
Red Sox, that pressure wouldn't be there, as he would bat 8th or 9th in the order. He would be a glove first player, and any production on offense would
be gravy. Greene would be replacing a hitter in Lugo whose OPS is/has been below .700 for two seasons now (counting this season).
So, even if Greene's bat doesn't wake up, we wouldn't lose anything; and we would gain a better glove at SS. I would rather have Wilson, but the Pirates probably want a lot for him. The Pirates may not be sellers at the deadline--they are trying to avoid the Phillies record for consecutive losing seasons. Nevertheless, even if Bay, Marte, and Wilson stay where they are, the Pirates should still finish the season below .500.

Lugo is a walking poster child for late term abortions. I know he's in the 95th trimester or whatever but he should be the loophole to the law. mahalo

I saw Gammons on BBTN while I was at the gym tonight. The sound was off, but the close captioning was on and he said something to the effect that the Braves
FO approached the Redsox to see if they would have any interest in Youkilis and Hansen for Teixeira, but that the Redsox were not interested. The way he
phrased it made it sound like it wasn't a straight out offer, but more of the team putting out feelers to see if there was mutual interest....
Youkilis has shown more power this year then he has in the past increasing his slugging almost .100 points over last season, and seems to be a little more aggressive this season. Statistically he is performing similar to Teixeira. Youkilis is a year older but the sox have control of him through arbitration the next two seasons, so he is going to be significantly cheaper then Teixeira. If Boras is asking for $20M AAV for a long term deal for Teixeira then you are making a pretty serious long term committment to keep him with no gaurantee you won't be out bid by the Yankees or Orioles. Based on their body types I would expect Teixeira to age better then Youkilis. In spite of all the hard work at AP in the off-season Youk looks like a guy who will start adding weight (in a bad way) as he ages. But currently both are very good defensive first basemen. I don't think the trade is worth losing a talented yet inconsistent reliever (Hansen) and taking on the long term risk/cost of having to deal with Teixeira's free agency. That money is probably better spent this off-season in LF, in relief pitching and in paying the freight to get rid of Lugo. |

What's wrong with Cora is that he's not that great defensively at SS (he's good at 2b, but a bad SS). He's not good enough defensively to be a
defensive caddy. I'd let Jed play at SS, and look at a John McDonald. He can't hit, but is a legit glove wizard.

I don't know if I'd go quite as far as Temple in disowning the idea of getting a reliever, but it sure seems like a crapshoot at best, and I'm not
just thinking about Gagne. The other day I was reading a Philadelphia paper and it was talking about a game the Phillies had lost the previous night because
two of the stalwart members of their very reliable pen had not done well. Those two were J.C. Romero and Rudy Seanez!! If relievers are in such short supply
that they command a king's ransom, then put the money back in your pocket - you probably aren't much if any worse off bringing Masterson back, giving
Hunter Jones a try, and seeing if that sufficiently patches over your issues. At this point the only outside person I'd be interested in is Marte, and I
don't see the Sox getting him, so end of discussion. The Teixeira situation points out again the very important role of timing in building a franchise. If
Lowell's contract had run out this year instead of last, the Sox might be tempted to replace Lowell with Tex and move Youk to 3B, marginally weakening the
defense but getting younger and perhaps a bit more powerful (though Lowell continues to defy the odds and put up another very valuable season so far -- could
he be another Dewey Evans, who truly figures out the hitting game after age 30?). But now Youk is an AS, Lowell is signed for two more years after this one,
and the situation isn't right. Similarly, we're pondering about what to about possibly replacing Manny and/or Papi in the middle of the order, but we
don't know what we really have there at this time, and it doesn't look like help will be arriving from the farm in time to provide a viable fallback
position. Theo has some really tough decisions to make in the next 8 months.

I like the idea of trading for Greene if the cost will not be a lot. I am willing to trade Coco+@ for him because I love his defense at SS.

Some thoughts:
1. What about exploring a trade for Nady? The Pirates have McCutchens ready to step in and play - he's their future any ways. Nady is Arb eligible after this year so you could let him walk if you wanted to. I can't imagine the cost beening too high. Maybe a package that includes some of these names Johnson, Jones, Hansen, Carter. I know 5 OF's would be tough to juggle for a month, but it's only August because then rosters expand and then you carry more bats during the Post Season than you do during the Reg Season. Nady offers protection should Ortiz flounder when he comes back and would be a nice PH options paired with Casey come playoff time and the weak end of our lineup is coming up. 2. It's a little over the top to say that you'd never trade for a reliever even if that meant the difference between the Playoffs (and possible WS) or going home early. I certainly wouldn't mortgage the farm for a guy, especially someone like Marte (don't get me wrong i'd like him but he's no super star - guarenteed money in the bank guy). That Gagne trade hurts now, but I thought it was good at the time and I don't think the cost was that great. Beltre was the one who at the time i cringed at and still do. Gabbard and Murphy don't bother me - Sox FO knew Gabbard had injury issues and Murphy is IMO playing over his head. 3. that being said, i'd rather attack our bullpen issue from within and ride it out. I do think MDC is improving and finding his groove. He's gotten it done before in the playoffs so that's a great sign. Oki is improving a bit, but he needs to be taken out of the 8th inning bridge role. Ardsma is pitching great, still he's scarey because he has little track record, but I believe in John Farrell and it seems like he's helped DA find his confidence. Masterson is an exciting, albeit unknown, addition - lets home he's everything we hope he'll be. He's already proven he can get out MLB Hitters and it seems like he doesn't get rattled. I'm ready to see Bard and/or Jones to see what they can do. 4. Youks improved all facets of his game every year - he works an AB as good as anyone. I'm not sure how good Tex is at that, but the Sox are so tough in the playoffs because everyones focus is top notch and when that lineup is focused it takes a SP approx 20 pitches an inning even when he's cruising. Remember Ubaldo Jiminez in game 2? That guy was pitching well, (he ended up walking 5 and giving up 2 runs in only 4.2 innings of work, but anyone that watched that game knows the Sox just worked him like there was no tomorrow. Those walks were earned. (50 of his 91 pitches were strikes) 5. The Schilling Injury gives the Sox flexibility to not have to have a pitching on their roster by Sept 1 in order to add him to the post season roster so a lights out Sept call-up could be in the mix. |

for 6.5M through next year so no long term commit on bad money either. I would absolutely love to buy low on Greene.

No, no it's not.Oh, my bad, I didn't realize you didnt believe that. I was wrong! You do understand the importance of park effects right? Last year Fenway had a 42% higher park factor from PetCo... 42! That's a lot. There's also the pesky fact that the guy has historically put up a 732 OPS in the most extreme pitcher's park, and that he'd be playing in one of the most extreme hitter's parks. But because you say so I'm wrong.

TokenWilliams wrote: Are you serious? Maybe Jones, but there are 2 lefty's already in Boston's pen. But Bard? You're ready to trot him out there for the Sox? He's only had a short time in AA and still has shown flashes of control issues. He needs more time to develop in AA and then could use some time in AAA, too. Bard is not an internal option this year (outside of a cup of coffee in Spetember - but even then, I don't think I would do that with him yet).

Major league hitters would absolutely eat Bard's lunch at this point in time. I'd rather throw Tee-it-up Timlin out there this year.
