I just hope Lowrie isn't being recalled to back up Cora and get the occasional start. Free J-Lo!

With the audition Lowrie had earlier in the season, I'd think he HAS to start the majority of the games. Cora might play a little more than he has to this
point in the season, but I hope it isn't much more. I think at this stage of his career Cora with much more exposure might become a real liability.
Varitek/Moss/Lowrie gives a little different feel to the bottom of the lineup than Crisp/Varitek/Lugo. I suspect that the lineup posting for tonight will garner a bit more interest than usual !!

This is pure statistical noise. It's predictive value is close to nil. Hitting with 2 outs and RISP isn't a persistent skill.

Big Papi tentatively scheduled to be the next veteran Sox player rushed back too soon from an injury.
Shortly after the All-Star break he will play 3 days in AAA, take a day off, get 3 games in AA, and then come back up.

Thurston's a classic AAAA player, and players with his profile aren't really that uncommon. Good teams like the Red Sox stock their AAA teams with guys like him for situations when the shit hits the fan. Honestly, his AAA stats don't show any real improvements from his past two AAA seasons. Maybe he gets a call in September if the Sox can spare a 40 man spot. |

Don't you feel for the guy? He's hitting much better than Lowrie. He's a league All Star again. He can competently play several positions.
Life's not fair, and baseball certainly isn't. But he can't do much better than he has done to earn a chance. I'm not pushing him. I'm
trying to look at it from his perspective.

He's got an OPS of .813 at AAA, it's not like he's tearing the cover off the ball. Lowrie is slumping now at AAA, but I'd still go with Lowrie
over Thurston in terms of their relative chances of having OPS over .800 at the major league level.
Do I think he could fit on someone's bench at the MLB level? Probably somewhere. Do I feel for him? To an extent. He chose to sign with the Red Sox when they had Lowrie at AAA. Maybe he thought Lowrie would be moved in a deal. Who knows. Either way, he's likely making more than the average minor league player (the Sox generally offer better deals), and he still has a decent shot at getting a cup of coffee in the majors. As I said, there are several AAAA players out there. I'm not going to worry about the fate of every one of them. "Life's not fair, and baseball certainly isn't. But he can't do much better than he has done to earn a chance." He's 28 (in his hitting prime) and he's only putting up an .813 OPS. If he "can't do much better than that", well that's frankly not a huge positive for him. As for the fact that baseball isn't fair, I don't want to sound like a dick here, but get over it. He's not so much better than other backup major league players that its outrageous he's in AAA. |

I watched JD Drew's pop fly home run over and over and I still couldn't figure out how it got out. It looked like he barely got it. If I watched the
game live, my first thought as soon as he hit that ball would have been lazy fly to LF or maybe in the first few rows of the foul territory. Sure enough,
Hittracker said it went 89.4 mph off the bat (second weakest of the season for non-inside the park HR's) and it went a standard distance of 306 feet, the
4th shortest of all HR's hit this year. I'll take it though.

With the game Wake just threw, Charlie Zink is apparently stuck in AAA for the foreseeable future. I wonder, if Wake were to, say, have a recurrence of last
season's back trouble, if Charlie would indeed get a chance?

They showed a replay of it from the 3rd base camera. Really showed how softly it was hit. Fenway is amazing when it comes to how you can get some cheap hr's. Then hit some bombs that don't get out. I thought Casey hit 2 the last 2 days. That knucklehead in the stands interfered Friday night. Hard to tell if it gets out or not. But, definately out of any other stadium. And, Casey hit a rocket off RF wall in front of bullpen last night. Out of most stadiums. |
