"We need these guys"
I hate to say it, but the Sox will have to go into freefall before you see any real changes. Theo isn't going to do anything about the lineup either. He'll get a bullpen piece, but that's about it.

You want to know what Francona is thinking?

I think Kottaras would probably bat ~.200 if called up. Plus his defense reportedly sucks. Brown is a better all-around bet.

Why? You get less intentional walks with good hitters behind you.

Lugo was in the game because of Sean Casey pinch hitting for Cora against Farnsworth leading off the 8th. Hindsight says Francona should have saved Casey for the 9th.thanks ... I was doing stuff outside and missed the 7th and 8th ... I was in Houston for the three games and kept my cool over there ... but ... I absolutely lost it this game in the 9th and had to vent |

He also has an ego, too (for some reason unbeknownst to me). He flaunts the "C" on his jersey for no reason and he looked like a complete joke with
his "patriotic" catcher's gear in yesterday's game.

I place the blame for this loss on Francona. For all his good points, and there are many, he never has been a really good in-game manager. Pinch-hitting for
Cora in the 8th was lame. Putting Moss in to run for Ramirez makes sense most of the time, just not today. And with no one out and Crisp, a very good bunter,
at bat, why not do a suicide squeeze? The worst thing that could have happened, and it was very unlikely, is a DP. With Crisp's speed that probably would
not happen.
If Francona had not made the moves he did, then regardless of what happened with Crisp, he would have had Casey to PH for Varitek, and Moss to PH for Cora. I think the odds of getting that second run would have been higher playing it this way. But this game also shows how bad it is to have only four position players on the bench. That works when the lineup is strong all the way through. It doesn't work when there are consecutive black holes in the lineup. Given the lack of clutch hitting that we've seen for the past 10 days, and the number of times the black holes have come up at critical times, the team might be better off with one less RP, and one more bat. |

I'm hopeful that something good will come out of this game. It could be a wake up call for Theo on several fronts:
"If I was a GM and I was trading with somebody and I knew I was going to get minor leaguers in return, I'd come to our organization before I went
to anyone else. Everybody that comes out of our organization knows how to play the game." --Josh Beckett

Only resign the money-hungry Varitek (Boras) if he takes market value or below. Lowell did that last year for the Sox, it's time for the money-hungry captain to do that as well.I would say don't make an offer at all.
Boston doesn't deserve me.

I like the safety squeeze bunt, don't think it is used enough in baseball. It is an effective play, would have been perfect for Coco's at bat.
Francona has to know what he is working with and Coco hasn't hit since he left the Indians, he is a piss poor hitter in several ways. There is nothing impressive about his offensive game besides his speed, a tool which is minimized through lousy pitch recognition and an awful OBP. When you have a piss poor hitter at the plate like Coco Crisp, followed by two more of them (Varitek and Lugo), you bunt in that situation and at least tie the game. Once the tie is in the bag, you try to win it with Varitek and Lugo, who might perform a little better without the pressure.

The thing that disgusted me was Tek swinging 2-0, when Mo was clearly bringing his C+ game today.

Just got back from seeing the grandchildren. I think the comment that hasn't been made in this thread is kudos to Masterson. Yes, he was a long way from an
artistic success, but he still held at bay a team that should be about as difficult as any he has to face, in his first visit to the Big City, and showed a lot
of Jon Lester moxie doing it. One thing the Sox seem to have done in their recent drafts is get some young players who are not averse to sticking their nose in
and competing. The real issue in this game, if there must be one (you truly can't win them all) is that the Sox offense couldn't scratch out a single
thing against Mussina. That said, it appears as though TB will win again tonight, pushing their lead up to 6 games in the loss column. This isn't any kind
of disaster yet, but the gap is starting to get significant.

I never thought I'd say this, but...
...SIGN BARRY BONDS!!! For once I'm glad to have been working during the last few innings of the game. Otherwise there's a very good chance that a TV in my house would've been broken.
Lugo is a walking poster child for late term abortions. I know he's in the 95th trimester or whatever but he should be the loophole to the law. mahalo
