PawSox up 2-0 after 1, Thurston & Carter with a HR. Hansack hasn't been scored on in his last three starts.
Edit: Portland all zeros for Bowden. Wagner with a 2 run HR. top of the 4th
Greenville excellent start by Capellan wasted by relief. Greenville down 4-1 8th.

PORTLAND:
I just started listening to the Portland game, announcers saying he's in command of everything and is throwing a 2 seamer 89-91.
1st batter in the 4th attempted a bogus bunt for the first hit but announcers saying Jiminez made a great play and throw.
Middle 4th 2-0 Portland

Edit Haha beat you that time but keep reporting, It's 7am here and I've been up all night watching the Sox overcome the MFY and more piss poor umpiring

According to the Sea Dogs announcer, Bowden's fastball has been at 88-91 (I assume, based on stadium readings).

4th - bunt out 5-3 (good play by Jimenez to glove it and throw on the run), 6-3 groundout, flyout to LF

2-0, mid 4th

If Bowden truly doesn't have all that great stuff but has enough pitching savvy to overcome the best toolsy guys in AA, then he may be a pitcher who will struggle some to adapt to AAA. The hitters there, some with major league experience, are more willing to work the pitcher and figure him out than just try to overcome him with raw talent. To cite an extreme example, it was AAA that did Abe Alvarez in. Sometimes the toolsy pitchers find their most difficult jump is to AA, while the finesse guys have more trouble with the jump to AAA.

I understand the premise of that but the Alvarez comp is a reach even as an extreme example, 91-93 (which he has been clocked in this game) isn't what I would call a finesse pitcher.

Infield hit and a single in the 5th but no damage. Reportedly, he hit 93 on one pitch. Still 2-0.

That can't be. Keith Law said he talked to a professional scout who's attended two Bowden starts and has never seen him hit over 92 mph on the radar. Clearly this stadium gun must be off.

asf, don't get down on Bowden's stuff based on a few recent reports. He's got three above average pitchers (four if you count the 2-seamer as a separate pitcher), solid command of each, and the body to handle a heavy work load. He must be doing something right to be putting up the ERA and SO/BB ratio in AA as one of the youngest pitchers in the league.

Lugo is a walking poster child for late term abortions. I know he's in the 95th trimester or whatever but he should be the loophole to the law. mahalo

Bowden is a finesse pitcher (command and control pitcher), just that he has plus pitches. He locates, doesn't usually challenge. He generally works on the corners both inside and outside to either hand batters and usually low. He's only had a few games where he didn't have good command of his FB. AAgain tonight though, he has different command out of the set than the windup. Tonight, hs FB was high in the zone. He usually works low in the zone. He also threw a lot of changeups tonight, with runners on. He usually goes to his curve with runners on. I seriously doubt if he'll have any problems with AAA as opposed to AA, he throws strikes and his stuff is way better than Abe's. No way is tat a comp. Bowden is out, Large is in. I don't know what his pitch count was.

Willie the Portland gun is considered to be one of the most accurate in the league. Law probably just saw him on nights when he was throwing the 2 seamer and not the 4 seamer. Generally, for whatever reason, Bowden doesn't usually mix them. We've had several reports from Portland attendees that said stadium gun readings matched scout gun reading.

Bard now in for Portland, hopefully they give gun readings for comp.

edit: 93-97mph

Bard hit as high as 98 stayed consistently at 94-97, The announcer said he has been clocked at 100 a couple of times this year. Not sure what that says about the accuracy of the stadium gun but that is pretty much what Bard has been reported to throw. So I guess I would put some faith in the 91-93 readings Bowden was hitting.

Strange that Bowden, in pretty much complete control, was pulled tonight after 5 innings. Hard to believe that he threw enough pitches to 17 hitters to warrant removal at that point, since he walked no one. Except that he pitched 142 innings last season, which means they might be targeting him at 170 - 175, say, this year. He is now at 100, with maybe 11 starts left to go in the regular season, and I suspect they'd like him to make a couple of playoff starts if the opportunity presents itself. 13X6 = 78. So maybe they feel the need to limit him just a little bit.
