Has Delcarmen thrown a single curveball in this outing?
It's all fastballs and change-ups. |

Brutal loss.
I'm not thrilled about trading prospects (yet again) for bullpen help. |

It didn't have to be this way. It's obvious that Francona doesn't trust Smith, but he's said many a time that it's a marathon, not a
sprint. Now the game is lost anyway, and he burned Hansen and MDC 50 pitches pitching on back to back nights. The whole thing reeks faintly of Zimmer. What was
he going to do if Hansen and MDC DID get him through the 8th with a lead - pitch Paps the 4 time in 5 nights for the save? If there was EVER a game to let
Smith see if he could take the next step, this was the one. A 3 run lead, Smith having not pitched since Tuesday, just cried out for putting him in and seeing
if he could deliver 2 or 3 innings again. Now the pen is starting to get fried again as we go into TB and NYC next week - not the best way to prepare for these
showdowns.

I was worried about this when they pulled Dice-K yesterday after only 5 innings and 87 pitches. If he wasn't ready to give more than that he should still
be building arm strength back up in AAA. Big innings game needed by Beckett tomorrow or we are in some trouble against the Rays and Yanks. Especially now that
we will be facing legit lineups again.

I was most annoyed by not pinch hitting Aardsma and sending him out for a 2nd inning. The post-game crew seemed a bit harsh on Hansen's outing today
whereas I felt he pitched solidly. The single up the middle was a weak hit ground ball just out of the reach of Pedroia and other than that, he pitched well.
Delcarmen was thrown to the wolves though. He didn't have it, and he should have never been kept in there after the walk.
This game reeked of a "Let's not throw Papelbon today" loss. While it's hard not to disagree with their handling of Paps, especially after how successfully he finished last year, it really annoys me that they change everyone's elses role in the game to try to protect thier closer. Any other day Hansen is starting the 7th and Delcarmen and Oki would be working the 8th. Because Tito tried stretching out his relievers and changing their roles (mainly by bringing out Aardsma in the 7th, but also slightly by not having as short of leash on Delcarmen as I thought he should have), we ended up losing. There's no way I'd throw Paps out in the 8th given the tie game and his recent workload, but I'm not sure Delcarmen was the person I wanted to throw to Berkman. And while Papelbon might have worked a lot recently in terms of days, he threw very few pitches, especially in the last 3 days: JUN 22 STL 19-15 JUN 24 ARI 19-13 JUN 25 ARI 5-4 JUN 27 HOU 13-9 Watch tomorrow be one of those blowout games in which we won't need to use Paps. |

That's what they're there for. For a team like the Red Sox, a substantial portion of the utility of having a deep farm system comes from using
prospects to trade for established major-leaguers. I'd do a Murphy-Gabbard-Beltre type trade for bullpen help every year. The key (obviously) is to
acquire an arm better than the frog.

It really just depends on what you mean by prospects. I wouldn't trade Clay, Masterson, or Bowden for anyone, but I would gladly trade players on the level
of Gabbard, Murphy, and Beltre again, albeit for someone better than Gagne. I would prefer a lefty to back up Oki, such as Fuentes.
We actually are in a position where we should make a deal this summer just for the sake of clearing out some prospects. David Pauley and Charlie Zink are both pitching as well as they ever have, and should be able to fetch something decent in return. Also, Brandon Moss appears to be blocked for another 2 years assuming Manny returns, especially if Crisp doesn't move. If there was a decent reliever out there on the market, I'd gladly swap out these three players for some players who could help the team win this year. Lowrie wouldn't bother me either, but I'd much rather prefer him going in a deal that would pull in C.C. rather than a middle reliever. |

It would be nice to see Ellsbury string together some quality at bats, now that he's playing every day.
He's getting jammed way too often. |

Walking the pitcher after being ahead 0-2 was pitiful. Losing 2 of 3 to this horrendous team would be completely embarrassing.
Going back to the 1st inning for a minute, I'd like to point out a growing trend that has been really bothering me: homeplate umpires more and more seem to be making the strike call on a check swing as opposed to checking with the 1st base umpire. Unless there is absolutely no question that the batter went around, I see no reason why the homeplate umpire doesn't always check with the guy with the best view (1st base umpire) on those borderline check swings. Maybe making that call themselves makes them feel more powerful or something, but personally I just don't get it.
Lugo is a walking poster child for late term abortions. I know he's in the 95th trimester or whatever but he should be the loophole to the law. mahalo

Yeah, JB is not even close to a #3. In the K/9 and BB/9 departments, Beckett is still top notch.
