Tim Federowicz | #23 | ||
Age: 20 Born: August 5, 1987 Apex, NC Height: 5-10 Weight: 213 Bats: Right Throws: Right Drafted: 7th round; 2008 How Acquired: Draft College: North Carolina High School: Apex HS (NC) ETA: 2012 SCOUTING REPORT: He was not the force at the plate he was in his first two years, hitting just .312-3-37, and his throwing mechanics behind the plate were called into question. He still possesses above-average arm strength, though, and a number of clubs see his future on the mound-though Federowicz worked in only seven innings during the regular season (0-1, 1.23, 4 BB/13 SO) and has expressed a desire that he doesn't want to become a full-time pitcher. His presence was felt just as much on defense as he controlled the running game with a strong arm and excellent release. He wasn't afraid to throw behind runners and picked off several, including three in one game while throwing out a fourth on a straight steal. His overall receiving skills are considered shaky as he has a ways to go in both receiving and blocking balls, and managing a game. Federowicz has often taken the mound at UNC to close out games, but made only one brief pitching appearance at Chatham. His arm strength is his best tool. He touched 95 mph and throws strikes with a short arm action, but wasn't used again last summer because it takes him an unusually long time to recover. His fastball was a more common 91-93 mph for the Tar Heels, but he augmented it with a quality changeup. JOSH PHEGLEY IN 09

Christian Vazquez | #24 | ||
|
SCOUTING REPORT: Though Vazquez clearly ranks behind Jimenez on the Puerto Rican catching chart, there has been some speculation that Vazquez could be a fairly high pick for a couple of teams. He has a strong, wide-hipped build similar to the Molina brothers of Puerto Rican catching fame, but retains very good quickness behind the plate. Vazquez has advanced defensive skills behind the plate and a plus arm that can produce sub-2.0 game pop times. His offensive game isn't as advanced but he can flash power and bat speed at times. Age: 21 Born: November 18, 1986 Issaquah, WA Height: 6-7 Weight: 220 Bats: Right Throws: Right Drafted: 8th round; 2008 (27th round; 2006 by NYY) How Acquired: Draft College: Oklahoma City University High School: Issaquah HS (WA) ETA: 2011 Lee still has a lot of projection in his 6-foot-7 frame-particularly in a fastball that has touched 94-95 mph, but is more consistently 91-92. Lee's best pitches are his power curveball that he uses as his out pitch that hits in the mid 70's and an average slider, and he can throw four pitches for strikes. Lee doesn't have a workable changeup yet and his mechanics still need some tinkering.10-2 record and 2.79 earned run average. 124 K/28 BB in 93.2 innings. Opponents hit .222 vs. Lee. Age:
Born: Rough and Ready, CA Height: 6-3 Weight: 205 Bats: Right Throws: Right Drafted: 10th round; 2008 How Acquired: Draft College: Santa Barbara CC High School: Nevada Union (CA) ETA: 2014 A converted position player who spent his first full year pitching, Ruiz went 6-6, 3.97 this spring with 59 strikeouts in 66 innings. He began the year as a starter but had limited success in that role and was moved to the bullpen, where his 88-93 mph fastball and power curveball flourished. JOSH PHEGLEY IN 09

SCOUTING REPORT: McClain was a weekend starter at Tennessee in 2007 (6-3, 4.64), but was an academic casualty and ended up at Cumberland, the 2004 NAIA national champion, for his junior season. He has fringy stuff with a below-average fastball at 86-88 mph, and relies mainly on pitchability for his success. His changeup, which creates deception and disappears at the plate, is his go-to pitch. He has a quick, loose arm with an easy delivery. McClain went 7-2, 2.91 this spring at Cumberland and showed much better command of his stuff (77 IP/28 BB, 86 SO) than he did a year ago at the Division I level, when he walked 40 and struck out 39 in 83 innings. Age: 18 Born: December 24, 1989 Spokane, WA Height: 6-5 Weight: 205 Bats: Right Throws: Right Drafted: 13th round; 2008 How Acquired: Draft College: Commitment to Kennesaw State High School: Armuchee HS (GA) ETA: 2014 SCOUTING REPORT: Along with great length and tons of physical projection, Wilson already throws in the low 90s, with some reports higher than that. He also has a quality upper-70s curveball. The two pitches enabled him to post an 8-2, 0.64 record as a junior. Wilson is a very good multi-sport athlete in his own right. He excels on the basketball court in addition to the baseball field. He hasn't been exposed to as many scouts as most young prospects in Georgia and could be a surprise this spring as some scouts get their first serious looks at him. Wilson was outstanding at times this spring, tossing two no hitters. JOSH PHEGLEY IN 09

Age: 18 Born: October 16, 1989 Duson, LA Height: 6-2 Weight: 205 Bats: Left Throws: Left Drafted: 14th round; 2008 How Acquired: Draft College: Commitment to Chipola JC High School: Acadiana HS (LA) ETA: 2014 SCOUTING REPORT: He's a powerful lefthanded hitter who was more highly regarded as a pitcher a year ago before his power blossomed more quickly than his fastball, after he added 20-plus pounds to his broad-shouldered frame. Yockey has right-field skills with a strong arm and 7.0-second speed in the 60, but his power will be his ticket. He can hit the ball a long way with his extended, powerful swing. JOSH PHEGLEY IN 09

John Lally | #31 | ||
Age: 18 Born: April 19, 1990 Ran. Santa Margarita, CA Height: 6-1 Weight: 195 Bats: Left Throws: Left Drafted: 15th round; 2008 How Acquired: Draft College: Commitment to Loyola Marymount High School: Santa Margarita (CA) ETA: 2014 SCOUTING REPORT: Lally has steadily been adding strength and velocity to his pitches since the winter of 2006-07, when he was just 80-83 mph at a Perfect Game Showcase in California. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound lefthander is now throwing in the low-90s with a power curveball and a quality changeup. He has a short, quick arm action. Lally was a well-known prospect back when he was a soft-tossing, finesse southpaw because he always projected well and was able to throw three quality pitches for strikes. Now he has the same pitchability, but power stuff to go with it. Lally had a 3.02 ERA as a junior with 62 K's and 20 walks in 57 innings. Only threw 8 innings after missing almost the entire spring with an arm injury. JOSH PHEGLEY IN 09

Age: 18 Born: June 18, 1986 Merritt Island, FL Height: 6-1 Weight: 200 Bats: Left Throws: Left Drafted: 16th round; 2008 How Acquired: Draft College: Central Florida High School: Cocoa High School (FL) ETA: 2012 SCOUTING REPORT: He's a mature, solidly-built southpaw whose fastball touches 90-91 mph on occasion. He complements his fastball with a good late-breaking curveball and promising changeup. Herold does an excellent job of keeping the ball low in the strike zone and off the fat part of the plate as he'd allowed just two doubles and four home runs on the year. JOSH PHEGLEY IN 09

Age: 18 Born: May 10, 1989 Berryton, KS Height: 6-2 Weight: 205 Bats: Right Throws: Right Drafted: 16th round; 2008 How Acquired: Draft College: Commitment to Wichita State High School: Shawnee Heights (KS) ETA: 2014 SCOUTING REPORT: On the mound, Cooper is a sinker/slider pitcher with a fastball that reaches 92 mph with heavy life at the plate and a big, sharp-breaking, true 80-mph slider that he dominates hitters with. Cooper knows what he's doing on the mound, and while he's not especially projectable, he has solid mechanics and two present pitches he can attack hitters with. JOSH PHEGLEY IN 09
