Abe, I agree outfield question in Greenville will be interesting in the next couple of weeks. Mailman hitting .194 over his last ten games. Marks has picked up
a bit going .324 over his last ten. I would think somebody goes to Lowell during the SAL all-star break.

Greenville to Lowell in late June? Not sure what this does. Lowell and Greenville are essentially the same level. You will have Luis Sumoza, Kade Keowen, Mich Dening in Lowell already, plus I assume we will draft at least one college outfielder in the draft. As for Alvarez, he's 18 years old and has shown flashes of brilliance and periods of pure dreck. Let him learn. Keep throwing him out there. As for Miller, ???. He's made five appearances. Let's get some statistically relevant data before we jump to conclusions (which is not to say that he won't go to Lowell - he is the likeliest of the four to go IMO). |

I agree amfox, but the team did this with Doubront for some reason when he struggled last season. Of that list, I think that Mailman is the most likely
candidate, but as you point out, there's a logjam at OF in Lowell. I don't necessarily think that'll stop the Sox if they feel that Lowell is more
appropriate for him given his struggles in Greenville though.

I agree the list for Greenville is struggling but if there is not a player from Lowell or XST that would benefit from the move to Greenville - nobody on the
list seems to be overwhelmed during play that a move down would be a positive at this time.

Mailman (19YO, 597 OPS) has good K/BB numbers but is simply not getting hits. He's 19 and was known to need more strength. Once he gains strength, some of
these outs could become hits. I am inclined (without actually seeing him) to let him continue to work on matters in Greenville.
Marks (21YO, 741 OPS) has much of his value tied up in walks. He walks a ton and Ks a ton. He's like Mickey Hall without the speed or power. He has hit better recently with increased playing time, but I cannot say I am enthused. |

abe, I disagree with Holdzcom being on this list. While he has certainly struggled this season--particularly with his control which continues to hinder his
success--he throws gas and is coming off a pretty good 2007 season at AA and AAA. At only 26, I expect the Sox to give him many more chances to improve and
become major league caliber.
amfox, while Lowell and Greenville are both considered to be Low-A levels, there are some distinct differences between the two. For one, Greenville is a full season that consists of either players with minor league experience or the more polished rookie platers. Lowell, on the other hand, consists of either recently drafted rookie players (from HS or college) or players whom the organization felt are more raw and needed time in XST. So while there isn't a huge difference (or any difference) between the talent levels on the two teams, there are some differences in why the players were placed at each respective level.

My guess is they won't cut Holdzkom but he has been inconsistant at best @ McCoy.
Most times he's been downright awful. I'd like to see Suarez replace Spann. His bat speed is just too slow. |

Suarez and Velazquez would be redundant. I do agree that Spann needs to get his act together soon though, considering the number of guys at Portland beating
the door down.

I'd add Kyle Fernandes to that list. Heard a lot of bad things that went down last year, might be on a short leash, especially with the way he's
pitched thusfar.

WCP - I obviously know the differences between the two leagues, and we can reserve this discussion for another time.
AB - Spann is the 12th man on the team. Upgrading that position is not a priority. Until Khoury or Pinckney are ready to move up, no one needs to take his spot. I agree that Suarez and Velazquez are redundant. Frankly, Suarez should be holding his spot only until Diaz is ready and the fact that Khoury cannot regularly play SS (10G SS, 14G 2B, 25G 3B) on that team speaks volumes. I happen to like how Pawtucket is constructed, with nine regulars and three rotational bench players. At some point, Kielty will leave and Corsaletti or Bell will be promoted. If there was a 3B at Portland to promote, Ginter or Spann could be cut loose. |

I would be surprised if Devern Hansack lasted the year. He seems to have come back to earth over the last year and is taking up a 40 man spot. He has obviously
been passed up as the minor league emergency starter for the big club.

Yes, I have been focused on it over the past couple of weeks. The minor league folks did a tremendous job stocking Pawtucket this year.

Here's what I do:
Position players: CFO, Frezza and Di Benedetto to Greenville Jones, Stanley and Negron to Lancaster Jimenez and Nava to Portland (Segovia cut/DL and, when Engel returns, Sheely is cut/DL) Pinckney and Corsaletti to Pawtucket Spann and Danielson are cut/DL Pitchers: Buller/J.Rodriguez and Guerra to Greenville Ventura and Doubront to Lancaster Lentz, Maxwell and Jones to Portland (Lonergan back to the active roster) Vaughan, Haigwood and Bowden to Pawtucket [still working through what to do in Pawtucket - Asencio, Vaquedano and Holdzkom cut/DL are my initial thoughts] Because of the logjam in the upper minors, I do not expect all these moves to be made. I also expect several trades out of the AAA pitching depth come July. which will work out some of the logjam.

Maykol Sanchez hasn't played in two weeks and is the fourth catcher on the GCL roster behind Vazquez, Gilardo, and Chen. I wonder if he already has been
cut and we just don't know.
As for Lora, he played just once last week. Chances are the coaches are trying to work him out of his slump off the field. And with regard to the most recent cut, Blackmon, I wonder how much of that was a "mercy killing". He had been put on the Phantom DL when Expo got called up, and he probably saw the writing on the wall that he wasn't going to get back in the lineup this year without someone getting hurt. When there's a roster crunch, guys are offered a spot on the Phantom DL or their release - Blackmon may have changed his mind and took the latter. Best of luck to him - he never really had a shot behind Still, Expo, and even Farkes.

List looks pretty good, just one selection I disagree with. Vaquedano was great at AA this year, and despite his struggles in Pawtucket, the FO will give him
at least until the end of the year. However, from here on out will determine whether or not they decide to bring him back next year, as he's a FA at the
end of this season. Good list though, Abe.

I'd add Gil Velasquez to the cut watch list. With Natale on rehab he could be a candidate to be let go once Natale is healthy.
