I was at the game sitting in the GM last night and Masterson looked just ok. He threw too many strikes, if that is possible. He didnt seem to challenge many
hitters with pitches out of the zone and therefore hitters were not chasing anything and putting a lot of balls in contact. Pitch selection and location by
Varitek did not seem very good either, i think they just need some more time together in between starts which is hard when Masterson keeps getting sent down
the day after his start. I am however more comfortable with Masterson starting than I am with Buchholz. I really feel that if he hadn't thrown the no
hitter last year, people would have a completely different feel for him as a pitcher. We saw what happened to Anibal Sanchez and we should let Clay stay in
AAA for awhile to regain his effectiveness.

Masterson is primarily a sinker ball pitcher, for the most part he wants to pitch to contact. He has no real purpose to challenge hitters out of the zone. I would think most peoples opinions of Buchholz are the same, he is an immense talent that still needs refinement. I don't think the no-hitter changes that sentiment one way or another. I don't quite get the Anibal Sanchez comparison. |

I personally don't see it with Buchholz. He has had some good outings but just doesnt do it for me. The sanchez comment wasn't really anything other
than a no hitter doesnt mean your a great pitcher. Buchholz will have plenty of chances to prove me wrong and I hope he does. In terms of Masterson pitching
to contact, i agree although the Rays were getting way to many AO rather than GB which you would hope to see out of Masterson.

Everyone is allowed to have their own opinion and I guess i should say short run i feel more comfortable with Masterson. In 5 years, i think Buchholz will be
the superior starter but i feel he needs more seasoning. I think Masterson could be a dominant relief pitcher with his odd delivery. I know how most people
on here think and I agree with everyone else on pretty much everything.
I think the fact that we even are debating this is just a great thing because it just shows how much depth we have and how much confidence we have in all of them |

coco vs. madden | #36 | ||
|
that was an interesting exchange with a lot of f-bombs back-and-forth. i agreed with remy about coco's take-out slide on the attempted steal was a little
excessive, but you could see that coco was fired up about barlett blocking the bag with his leg on an earlier attempted steal. madden is a pretty good manager,
but he should leave it to the players to settle things on the field rather than yelling at coco while making a pitching change. perhaps we have the making of a
rivalry here, which is not necessarily a bad thing for the red sox.
also, there was nothing in today's boston globe or boston herald (sports coverage in boston is getting worse by the minute) about the the blown-call on pedrioia's 1st inning homerun down by pesky's pole. the lack of hustle by the 1st base and homeplate umpire is particularly disappointing. there is no need to wait until the arizona fall league to implement replays on blown homerun calls. that is at least 5 missed homeruns by ml umpires within the last two weeks.
Poorest spending of $3 million that I have ever seen.-fcastig 0220

mredsox89, I think you may be a bit short-sighted with this Masterson/Buchholz thing. LHB are going to start waiting on Masterson's secondary stuff and
just killing it without more refinement.
Any time a player first comes up from the minors, there tends to be a period when teams haven't scouted him well and he has success. It's how they do after teams make adjustments that determines how they'll pan out as a player. We've already seen teams begin to adjust to Masterson in his third start. I'm not saying he'll do poorly, but to say he's a better short-term option than Buchholz is folly right now. The honest truth is that BOTH could use a bit more seasoning - Buchholz with his fastball command, which is the last thing he needs before he can become a true ace; and Masterson with his change, which is the last thing he needs to stay as a starter and not eventually move to the bullpen. I'm not saying that either of those needs to happen in the minors either. In the grand scheme of things, I agree that this is a great debate to be able to have.
