You must be a proud papa!
Aren't you going to say something along the lines of "DRH will be the best player involved in that deal when its all said and done." Also, it was one game you vultures, I'd probably wait a bit longer before proclaiming the Joba transition to be a bigger screw up than the Bay of Pigs.

Tha's sad but hardly a surprise. He always has a shoulder issue but it's usually later in the year. Having it flair up so early in the new season was a
big red flag. Hopefully this clears up his shoulder and he can still pitch for a few more years without the pain.
You realize the FruitBat is signed for another 3 seasons? It's an absolute waste to have Joba pitch as a set-up man for 3 years until the FruitBat spreads his wings and flies away. The kid has four potentially plus pitches, something Papelbon can't even sniff. Paps has two plus pitches and he's working on his slider, which currently stands at fringy. Papelbon's stuff plays up better out of the pen because he can dial his fastball to 97 and let it go. Joba pitches well out of the pen but his stuff plays up better in the rotation. I think they are poorly executing this shift, most definitely. Send him to AAA for a month because not only is he stretching himself out but he needs to re-integrate his other pitches back in. It is horrible that they are forcing him to re-learn how to start at the major league level. I have some health concerns long term about him. I've read how he runs into trouble keeping his mechanics when he's starting and he comes close to throwing with an inverted W arm action so I have my doubt as well but not enough to keep him in the pen. mahalo ~Chach~

The game will be missing one of its greatest tough sons of btches in Smoltz. The pain that guy has pitched through to keep coming back at such high levels, truly a remarkable career. At first I thought they could pull off the big league transition, but the problem is that out of 62 pitches yesterday, 2 were curves and none were changeups. So the secondary stuff he needs the most he didn't work on at all. He's going to have a real tough go at becoming a starter if he doesnt trust those pitches because everyone knows the game plan with him, just sit on Slider and only go after FB that are entrentched in the middle of the plate. If he's not going to integrate those 2 pitches into his starts at the major league level, then its a mistake. The Yanks need to understand he's not going to look great there for awhile, but he's better than the alternatives still. Its a good idea to transition him in the bigs, but only if he's working on those pitches at the same time and you are willing to take the lumps that come with those growing pains.

Perhaps I'm missing something, Hairps. I didn't catch the game last night. Am I really to believe that he only got 3 swings and misses (all of which
were low and out of the zone so I figure they were sliders)? That seems very odd but very telling that guys are already sitting on the fastball. And it shows
only 4 outs when he pitched 2 1/3. I assume the other three outs are his K's, correct?

Bonderman... done for the year. I think its safe to
say the same for the Tigers' playoff chances.

Westbrook done too
Jake Westbrook is expected to undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the season. The AL Central is down two quality starting pitchers in one day. Westbrook, who had a 3.12 ERA in five starts, will be replaced by Jeremy Sowers in the rotation until Fausto Carmona gets back. He'll probably miss the first two or three months of 2009. |

Cuban baseball star, 19 year old Dayán Viciedo has defected to the United States. Apparently he plays 3b, SS, and OF. Has played with the Cuban National team
since he was 15. At age 16, he hit .337 with 14 HRs for Cuba. This guy would take a ton of money to sign, but given the lack of power-hitting corner infielders
in the system, and the rarity of this sort of talent, it may be worth throwing a few mil at this guy. Get 'er done Theo.

Speaking of which, what's the story with Kendry Morales? Same Cuban pedigre as Viciedo, raked in the minors, albeit in the California league which we know
tends to inflate (you hear that, Brandon Wood?).
Hasn't managed to break into the majors, though, and at 25, is starting to get stale like Andy Marte. |
