A: Ben Badler: Lin is one of the most interesting prospects in the lower minors right now. He already has the 70 arm, plus speed and fielding skills, and he's got a good approach at the plate. The bat is a weapon too... not sure if that fifth tool, the power, will be an above-average tool, but there's some projection there too. Right now he's more of a line-drive hitter.

Good stuff. He clearly has some pop (2 HRs last week), but even if his other tools pan out and he only has average power, he looks like he could have a really bright future.

No. 1 Jay Bruce:
Why He's Here: .632/.682/1.421 (12-for-19), 4 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 9 RBIs, 7 R, 3 BB, 2 SO
The Scoop: Bruce was so good this week that superlatives alone cannot do him justice. (A 2.103 OPS-are you kidding?) In last week's Hot Sheet, we speculated that Bruce was just getting started, because he had reached base in 12 of his last 19 plate appearances. But even we could not have been prepared for this type of offensive onslaught.

Bruce is hitting as well now as he has at any point in his pro career. He finished a single shy of the cycle on Wednesday, though in an encouraging sign, he did draw two unintentional walks in the game. He's batting .366/.398/.662 overall and has hits in nine of his last 10. And for such a young lefty batter, he hangs in against his own side, batting .383/.380/.660 in 47 at-bats.

For a man who owns a .566 career slugging percentage at the Triple-A level (at ages 20 and 21, no less), Bruce needs only to refine his batting eye (seven unintentional walks in 39 games) to get that first call-up to Cincinnati.

i had no idea where to ask this question, but its kinda related to this:

how long before the red sox consider promoting bowden? is he even close? i haven't been able to see him live, but it seems ON PAPER in his last 5 starts, and on the season as a whole minus one or two starts, he's looking really good in his second season in AA. any ideas?

He needs like 65 innings to reach 200 AA IP and should get there in late July. I think that would be an appropriate time to give him a cup of AAA coffee to end the year. I don't see the need to move him along at an expedited pace.

I agree. It might be different if the Sox did not have so many options, but they do. Their talent development and roster management - both - give them tremendous leverage. Beckett and Buchholz have to take a seat for a while? No problem as Masterson gets a look-see and Colon is ready to step in and eat a few innings. Both will be waiting in the wings for additional work and Schilling may join them at some point.

Contrast that with the very difficult situation the Yankees find themselves in. They have to depend on rookies with little or no experience, and that to my mind is asking too much. What's worse, the minute Mussina falls off the wagon again they are down to very few options. The Sox can afford to pace themselves with Bowden who should make it up to AAA at the ripe old age 22, and perhaps even be ready to dominate. That's real luxury.

21 if he does it this year, he doesn't turn 22 until September. I doubt seriously that he'd get a September call up to Boston no matter how well he does because he's not on the 40 man and doesn't need to be to be protected. With having put Masterson on the 40 man, the Sox won't want to use up another slot. 2nd half at Pawtucket would be good for him and there's no rush. He's on schedule to pitch 175-180 innings this year which means 200+ next year. That's not a lot of innings for him at that age because he has an "innings horse" body type and he works out heavily in the off season. I fully expect him to be competing for the 5 slot on the Sox next spring.

Contrast was a good word to start your second paragraph.

The Scoop: As a 20-year-old in the EL last year, Bowden struggled for the first time in his career since signing as a supplemental first-rounder in 2005. He wasn't bad-he had a 4.28 ERA in 96 innings with an 82-33 K-BB mark-but this year he has breezed by his competition. Using a low-90s fastball and a 12-to-6 curve that grades out as a plus pitch, Bowden has a 2.20 ERA in 61 1/3 innings, 58 strikeouts and 16 walks. "Being one of the youngest pitchers in the Eastern League is a difficult task coming in, last year especially," said Red Sox farm director Mike Hazen. "Mentally he's as strong as we have."

Also, former prospect Engel Beltre at #10. Where is Eric Gagne now anyway.....

The latest episode came yesterday, when Tabata was removed from the game in the fifth inning for "unspecified disciplinary reasons." According to Trenton manager Tony Franklin, "We had an in-house issue we needed to deal with. Don't ask me what it is because I'm not telling you,'' later adding that further discipline may be in store for Tabata. The Venezuelan native was already suspended earlier in the season after he stormed out of the clubhouse in the seventh inning after he struck out. And he's not exactly tearing it up on the field either: .235/.315/.283 in 213 plate appearances.

The Scoop: The Red Sox system is very well stocked at the shortstop position, so Navarro can be easily overlooked sometimes, but his bat has been speaking pretty loudly in 2008. Navarro has seen time at both second and third base also, but he's been Greenville's primary shortstop for most of the season with Oscar Tejeda sidelined due to staph infections. One of the more offensive-minded of the Boston shortstops, he's hitting .291/.354/.457 in 230 at-bats on the season, plus he's chipped in six home runs and his 40 RBIs are second on the team. Navarro's numbers have gotten better in each month as well, going from .265/.315/.382 in April to .372/.426/.767 so far in June.

So this year he almost quit playing baseball entirely, has been benched for not backing up a play in the OF, been suspended and has now been removed for disciplinary reasons all while turning in an abysmal hitting line. That sounds about right for the 37th best prospect in baseball(BA). I'm thinking the Manny Ramirez comps might quickly become Milton Bradley comps.

I'd love to lick the tears off of Joba's face... I'm sure they taste like sweet golden candy...-CheapSeats61

I'm not sure this is the right season for negative Milton Bradley comps...

So on Sundays most people prefer to get hammered and watch the favorite NFL team. I am in that boat myself.

Not saying Milton Bradley can't hit, and I'm sure most people still feel Tabata will turn it around and hit. He does however suck at life.

High Class A Lancaster outfielder Josh Reddick (Red Sox) hit over .300 in his pro debut last year, but he's well on his way to topping that this year. Reddick, 21, is now hitting .349/.378/.585 after hitting .481/.500/.593 (13-for-27) this week. Reddick has five straight multi-hit games and has a three-game streak of three hits or more.

No one on the hot list, Reddick was in the team photo.
