The cut watch list is back for 2008. Let me preface this by stating that I wish no ill will to any of the players, as its not pleasant when anybody gets
cut. My hope is that all of these players can turn it around and return to prospect status, and that space stays open for them in the org. Unfortunately, its
a fact of the business that some players are going to get released, especially with several players scheduled to come off the DL soon. Below is a list of
players that may be on the fringe when players start coming off the DL - some of these players might be willing to go to XST rather than getting released.
Javier Lopez 0-0, 4.50 ERA, 2/3 K/BB (out of options, probably the next out when/if the Sox add another pitcher)
Edgar Martinez 0-0, 7.94, 0/6 (unlikely to get cut anytime soon, but if any PawSox pitcher has to go when both Colon & Hansdack get
activated, Smith would probably be returned to Portland, and then who would be the next to go? They'd probably send EMart to XST to work on his secondary
stuff)
Jay Johnson .217/.286/.261 (either he or Danielson are candidates to go when Corsaletti is activated)
Portland Pitchers? (Smith may be returned soon, and at some point Portland will need to carry more than 2 hitters on the bench (they usually
carry 4 bench players) - what pitcher(s) would go? There are no real obvious candidates, probably a phantom DL or undeservedly sending some pitchers down to
Lancaster/XST)
James Russ 0-1, 6.75 5/5
Mickey Hall .200/.304/.400 (who else would go when Reddick gets called up? Maybe Sheely or Nava)
Luis Segovia .231/.231/.385 (if some Greenville IF gets called up to A+ when Tejeda returns, Segovia could go back to XST)
Will Vazquez .167/.167/.333 (Somebody else has to go when Tejeda/Kalish return. Does Greenville really need 3 catchers?)
