Right. My point is that if Velazquez needs a break over the next 4-6 weeks, Ginter can play short in a pinch. If he were to get hurt, my guess is only then would they call up Suarez.

Ginter has played 6 games at SS this year and 7 games at SS in his entire career. He is not an every-day SS and certainly not an emergency major league SS.

EDIT: For the sake of completeness, Ginter played 3 games at SS in the majors back in 2000/01.

Amfox, Ginter has played SS this season. If Velazquez were to get hurt and a long-term replacement were needed, they could DL him and bring Suarez up if necessary.

Daftpunkfan, are you talking about Pawtucket or Portland? If you mean Pawtucket, Bowden is still on the DL. They will need to make a move to take him off however, and that will likely be the Phantom DL for a reliever, with my money being on Holdzkom. If you did mean Portland, they only have a 3-man bench because Khoury is...

Pawtucket has eight relievers. Probably need to DL a reliever and then replace Spann with an infielder who can play SS (Velazquez is the only player on that roster who can play SS).

Portland does have a 25 Man Roster ATM. 9 Starting Lineup + 5 Starters + 4 Bench + 7 Bullpen. Easiest solution is to Release Spann or Madera

Pure speculation, but that may spell doom for Chad Spann. They're below the roster limit until Bowden comes off the DL, but that's not going to be long. Especially with Natale coming off the DL soon, it's getting tight up there.

As first reported by soxprospects.com and confirmed by the Red Sox, first baseman Lars Anderson and shortstop Argenis Diaz will be promoted from Single-A Lancaster to Double-A following the All-Star break.

One of the major advantages of this set of moves is playing time at suitable positions. It gives Diaz, Tejeda and Navarro pretty much daily play at SS. Still gets more 1B time, along with, more catching time for Expo. Additionally, with the promotion of Jiminez, the path is clear for future 3B promotions, this year or next. Whenever we have a Lancaster ready 3Bman (not soon unfortunately unless Arambarris surprises), Reza can move back to the more suitable 2B.

Getapitch2rip commented in the Mike Jones thread that there's only six pitchers in Greenville from the opening day roster. Figured this would be a neat number to look at for each team, since we've got the opening day roster from each team saved now. This is active players on the roster right now who were active on opening day for each team.
