The Sox may have some hard decisions when he is out of options because he very well may still be developing but they knew that when they signed him. Either way, it doesn't factor...

Diaz signed at 16... which makes him eligible for the Rule 5 draft at an earlier age. The Red Sox placed him on their 40-man roster last year because they thought there was a chance that he would be taken in the Rule 5 draft, and the Red Sox did not want to lose him. However... that starts the option clock... which means that by 2011, Diaz must be put on the 25-man roster or put on waivers.

I think the thought is since he is taking up a spot on the 40 man roster, the Sox need to rush him to figure out what they have since that spot might need to be used to protect some of their other talent in the next year or so. So being on the 40 man roster leads to his development being rushed.

I always thought this was one of the downsides to ML contracts to draftees, you might need to cut bait with them earlier than you might like to because of their...

Diaz seems extremely gifted defensively, I cannot wait to see him in the field. Does anyone know his Range Factor and Zone rating?

Brian, that's interesting because he does need more developement at the plate. He's only 21 and I can't think of another reason to rush him offensively.

One thing we're sorta overlooking on Diaz is the fact that he's already on the 40-man roster. This forces the Sox' hand a bit with promoting him; they need to be aggressive because the clock is ticking on him. I wonder if he weren't on the 40 would they let his offense develop a little more before promoting him?

Which would suggest that you don't put a guy this young in AA without a good reason normally, I'd expect to see more rushed blow out types. I find that very interesting. Given recent player development (everywhere but the pen?) you probably should have confidence in their judgement, and Sox judgement appears to be that Diaz is potentially special....

I agree with whoever said that the Sox may be looking at ArGZA to join the show in September. People were pretty surprised when he was added to the 40 and are surprised now, but I think his performance in the winter league sold the brass on his prospect status. He is clearly an amazing defender, but when he hit well over the winter I believe the brass put a green light on the kid.

I agree with you Rob. I watched Diaz take infield with Lugo three separate times in Ft Myers this spring and IMO he is physically superior in all areas to Lugo, especially his hands. The better the level, I feel, the better he'll concentrate and eliminate many of his errors. I also watched him numerous times when he was in the GCL and he is a gifted kid. If he continues to improve his offense he could be a Cabrera type ss (circa 2004).
