Beat, the numbers for xERA were most likely determined from a regression that attempted to predict the ERA given the specific components. Those numbers were the ones that gave the best fit.

Greek, the DIPS we used was the equation that Hairps provided in the general minor league thread. I don't know of any knuckleball adjustment for that specific formula. I really like it because it is...

xERA is defined in the Shandler book on page 263 as:

xERA represents the expected ERA of the pitcher based on a normal distribution of his statistics. It is not influenced by situation-dependent factors. xERA erases the inequity between starters' and relievers' ERAs, eliminating the effect that a pitcher's success or failure has on another pitcher's ERA.

What exactly is xERA? I can see what it consists of but how are those numbers decided on, and how is it any different from DIPS, other than it incorporates hits?

Sure can. MiLB has been a reliable source but places like BA and FirstInning have been off, mainly with pitchers. I guess that goes back to determining a flyball from a pop-up or a line-drive.

Greek, if you see differences between our site and others (especially MiLB.com), could you let me know. A lot of times MiLB goes back and changes plays from errors to hits and vice versa, but after we collect the data from them. I try my best to check for that nightly, but I usually don't do a full check until the weekend. For example, I'm working right now with the Lancaster data as it appears they switched a few errors around. Other than that, we match up...

Just doing these stats for select guys is tough enough, I couldn't imagine how much time and effort he's put into EVERY player. Excellent work.

edit: Someone asked a few days ago what the most accurate site for these kind of numbers and I agree with FR that here would probably be it. I've often found small discrepancies between us and other sites and have always taken our numbers over theirs. Maybe I'm just biased.

FR9 did a ton of work on this, I want to thank him personally again. Once the final touches are put on these pages, its going to be THE spot for splits, GO/FO ratios, advanced stats, and cumulative stats. We might even be able to keep the stats automated on individual player pages. We're working on styling it as well. Exciting stuff. Thanks FR9!

We now have a fully interactive stats database where you will be able to see the stats for all of our prospects updated on a daily basis. You will have the ability to sort by any field in the table, while also being able to shrink the dataset down to a specific team.
